There are many valid points, and I guess it is hard for me to understand the pressure that comes from scrutiny of world-class professional such as Totti (which he undoubtedly is). Thinking about it, Baggio himself has missed fair bit of qualifiers, but then again no man has been slighted more by his own NT than the great man. A lot of times, it was Arrigo Sacchi own decision to leave Baggio out of the squad. His determination to give all, and overcome that injury so that he can play at Japan Korea WC in spite of his age was so heart-warming. Would he have been so determined had he won the thing in 94? I don't know. But all I know, Baggio is a human being who is willing to exert himself until he got nothing left, and do not hestitate to suffer the embarrasment of playing for likes of Bologna and Brescia if that means extending his career.

This is why I am somewhat critical of Totti. I still honestly believe, despite what he says, play at this level for many many years, and have yet to show the world what he is truly capable of. Baggio, in spite of not winning the whole thing, can boast a track record which nobody can argue; 90, 94, 98. But Totti's do not get such universal recognition as it is evident from this board. Its pity because he is such a wonderful player to watch. I understand that spending time with family, friends, and not going through criticism is comfortable and desirable. But because of such difficult process in the way, the joy of winning is so much sweeter. And I don't see why this Azzurri team cannot challenge for big honours. Players like Aquilani, Rosina, Montolivo, Pazzini, Chiellini, Nocerino are really really really good players and add that mix to already strong group they have, I think Totti has still got a good chance to collect couple of more trophies along the way if lucky. He is only 30 or 31. As a fan of this beautiful game, I would like to see him playing highest level for a bit more. But you are totally right. Fans are critically to the longevity of sports. People should think a bit more before they write or say in newspaper or TV.

Well thats the press for you. Some of them are genuinely decent reporters but a lot are just garbage. Not just in football though. The lenghts people will go to. Did you know some people actually lobby to be named sexiest man alive or at least to be in the top 10 list. They pay to bump out someone on the list so they are added. It is the same with football, do you not notice that some guys just always seem to get good press no matter how ordinary they are and some have to play above human level to egt that kind of recognition. All those world and European trophies, most of the time the winner or the guys in the top 10 are just a joke but lobbying is what gets them there. As for Totti, I do not know him personally so I don't know what his motives were but I am sure he is man enough to take bad press as long as they are fair. But he would be angry if he feels the northern press are getting down on him for no reason. Have you not wondered why Italy don't tend to play games in Rome when Rome is in fact the capital city. I am not sure Italy have actually played there since they drew 0-0 with Englad in wc 94 qualifiers. It cannot be because the stadium is pants because its not. Anyways Totti is not an isolated case, a lot of players think international football is a bore. Small wonder, with the amount of nations you find in some groups. Totti is never gonna be Italy's leading goal scorer, like you said he has won the world cup, so his motivation is not that great. When you add the abuse he gets, you can see whay he feels fook it, i have had enough. But like you rightly said it is a shame because he still is Italy most talented player still currently player in terms of all round ability

I'm not Italian so I'm not familiar with the contrast between north and south on the peninsula. You may have a point. Why is that the Italia games are not in Roma? In most countries this is always in the capital.
I still think he is potentially the best Italian player although he looked like an airhead when I saw an interview he gave during the WC.

In Spain it the same thing they play at Mestiala stadium. I cannot remember them playing in Madrid either at the Bernabeu or Atletico's ground. Maybe the clubs do not allow them to do so, I don't know. I have heard the Basque are not that interested in Spain's National team but I am at a loss as to why they do not play in Madrid. In Italy however I have heard that even in Florence, they are not that fussed about the national team. Say what you will about Americans, English and Mexicans but they would travel to cheer their teams, well maybe not so much Americans as if it is not held in America then it is not worth a damn, but they are most patriotic people. In Italy however, you get some regions not that interested if Italy do well or not they just support their local team

They played a friendly a couple of years ago against England in Madrid. There was a lot of racist abuse in tht game from the crowd so that may have put them off going there for while.

the games are played in the more rural towns such as Bari, Napoli as these have big stadiums, but do not really get much interest, by taking the Italian team there, they will be generating more money for the country(foreigners), more youngsters in the south would have the chance of seeing some good football and also it would generate a lot of interest

Yes, but as you also know, the stadio San Paolo in Napoli has never been a very lucky place for the Azzurri, which is why they tend to prefer La Favorita in Palermo. Of course the late summer weather there also helps! BTW, how's the Testarossa running?

Spain played a recent Euro qualifier against Denmark at the Bernabeu in Madrid.
Also, Italy beat Ukraine 2-0 at the Olimpico in Rome October 06.

What I have a problem with is Donadoni's attitude. He should have shown some balls FFS. If you ask me Totti's behaviour isn't genuine either. He was fishing for attention. I guess we'll all know the truth when Euro 2008 is there.
