First of all my priorities would be fullbacks. Once that is settled and we're guaranteed quality players I'd move for one of those mentioned.
IMO it should be Hazard since we don't have a proper left wing. He'd be great and he's worth every penny I think. Then again, seeing us play flat 4-4-2 I think there's no way we'd make a move for him. He'd be better in 4-3-3.
Now, bar Hazard, my priorities would be Aguero and in case he's unreachable I'd go for Sanchez. Those two players are amazing and they'd fit in perfectly in our system. Aguero or Sanchez would potentially take Del Piero's place and both would do damn good. Pastore is great too, don't get me wrong, but he'd be my last pick IF we're playing 4-4-2 of course.
In case Hazard comes, we could even play Giovinco as a SS and it would be great.
I might be wrong, but every time I watched VDW play he was only decent, even at the WC I didn't see anything special about him. I didn't watch Beck that many times, but whenever I did he was pretty solid and IMO a better player than VDW.

I know we dropped the ball on the Gygeras, Molinaro's and Motta's...but what perplexes me the most is knowing how aweful Amauri was, has been and will always be while selling Trezeguet and not having a much better backup plan when we realized Dzeko wasn't coming. Then came the Luca Toni...in defense we stayed stagnant, but in offense we went backwards up until we signed Matri.
He hasn't had a great year, that's for sure, even though I've only seen a few games myself, but it's obvious the quality is there. I was fairly disappointed the times I did see him, but I know how good he can be. In the last game of the season, against direct rival Twente, for example, he was excellent. With the right motivation and a change of scenery I think he'd be great for any team that snatches him up. What worries me a bit is that he doesn't seem too strong mentally and looks unmotivated at times.

So is it pretty understood that Conte is synonymous with a 442 then? If that is the case then I would totally go for Hazard for LM and Kun for SS...that would be so unreal. It is too bad that we can't use players that we have no for exchanges. Perhaps IQ/Sissoko/Tiago for a Kun deal...but I only see Lille excepting cash only from us which would be problematic. Which brings me to my next point...the other two of Pastore/Sanchez play in Italy so we don't use any non-EU spots on them anyways not to mention we have players that both clubs would like to have and that might help us a lot more than we think. Not just by bring in a quality player, but off loading some deadweight, saving some money in the process due to reasons just mention which would allow us to fix the first point you mentioned.

The problem is we never seem to aim high when looking at defenders. It's like we barely focus on it, and when we do, we aim to spend as little money as humanly possible, meaning we end up with crappy players on loan or average transfer-free players. That's exactly the direction we're going again this summer.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It just seemed like you were saying we didn't do anything at the back, when I was trying to say we've been very wasteful when it comes to signings/loans at the back aswell. We just didn't aim for quality in almost every position we were looking to improve, which is why we never get anywhere.
It's very frustrating and especially after seeing how truly terrible our back line is, it's very disappointing we don't seem very active on that front again.
