If Conte insists on workhorses, this would be acceptable, but unrealistic:

Buffon
Cassani - Bonucci - Chiellini - De Ceglie
Krasic - Inler - Melo - Michel Bastos
Quagliarella - Matri
Yes, that would be an acceptable route to finishing 6th.

Krasic - Marchisio - Melo - Ribery

Matri - Aguero

Pirlo on the bench, no need for his creativity when you have Aguero, Ribery and Krasic. Also, Pirlo's defense doesn't suit a 4-4-2.

Problem is that Ribery makes like 8m a year or something but I don't think Bayern would play hardball like they did just a few years back and a sneaky bid of around 20m could convince them to sell.

Man, fuck Ribery. He's always injured as well. Those Bayern boys are made of glass.

The overall belief on this board that fullbacks defend, and attackers attack is maddening. They must each do both.

The aptitude of the defender's or attacker's skill in that area does not make up for the sheer loss of numbers.

You can't put Messi on the RW and say "oh our RB just needs to defend because we have Messi there". The RB must still get forward. This is why the fullback position is so crucial in today's game. When you play teams like us who play straight 4-4-2 with fullbacks who don't cross half, you have a man ADVANTAGE because your fullback does cross half. It's like you're playing with more players.

Now if I have 25M to spend, I spend it on a fullback like Cissokho or Coentrao. Their value for 25M greatly trumps any forward we can buy for 25M. Fullbacks are not as directly influenced by their team as much as forwards. If you spend 25M on a WC fullback you can pretty much be assured he will perform.

Fullbacks who can do that very well are called world class players, Ziegler and Beck are not world class because they don't do those things very well. Its very simple. You're clearly over rating those players and under rating the importance of having competent fullbacks.
You are looking at things too black and white. You can be capable, taking care of your role on the field and result in performing well without being an Evra. Of course it'd be nice to get a Maicon type, but it's not a case of you are either world class or you are garbage and Beck and Zeigler would be solid acquisitions. If we had a money shitting Sheik then by all means, go insane with transfers, but we don't and we need to do something regarding the left wing and a proper heir to DP.

I remember making a statement with Diego and look what happened there. Who cares about the markets perceptions of us? Make a statement with team results not individual brilliance.
The market perception is very important. When you get players of the stature of Aguero you are sending a message that you really are planning to get back to winning ways and will target great players to do so. That makes us more attractive and more likely for talented players to join us, which we badly need considering how our reputation has been bruised these past two years. Talent attracts talent, winning attracts winners.

Apparently, that's not what Conte thinks. He supposedly believes the fullbacks should remain in a defensive position.

I agree that we should go for quality fullbacks, but I dont understant why some people would rather spend most of our money there than with aguero/pastore.
do you think milan would have the season they had if they got 2 fullbacks instead of ibra/robinho?
