First of all there are 9 teams in England alone that deserve to be in the CL ahead of Arsenal as things stand. Second, this is a European competition. There are probably 10 teams from each of Spain, Italy and England that are better than some teams in the CL group stages, but it's a European competition. Third and finally, for as much faults UEFA has, and they are many, them being the governing body of european football makes a lot more sense than elite clubs governing the competition themselves. There is an inherent conflict of interest there. Enough rules and regulations are in favor of these top teams (see FFP) as it is.
It's a European competition that's supposed to be the top continental competition that's between the best teams. That's very clearly not the case now or in the plans for the future. Imo that's even more unfair than proposed ESL solution that had theoretical problem of Arsenal, Milan or Spurs not being in Europe TOP20, but still getting a place in the competition representing European TOP20. That's 3-4 teams, representing 15-20% of the competition. Right now I feel that around 50% of CL teams don't deserve to be there whether you look at the 32 teams in group stages or ~80 teams in qualifying stages.

This would be the best, even with two leagues.

But they had to start somewhere.

Above plus transfers/salary overhaul, meaningful internationals, less power for UEFA and FIFA, and you've a sensible, entertaining and up to date sport.
:agree:

Only the real nincompoops think this current, uncompetitive, out of balance mess is the future of the sport. It’s not sustainable, it’s broken, and the sporting merit argument is pure nonsense given that the same group of super wealthy clubs win their domestic leagues every single year, and CL is more of the same.

But Euros too butthurt about using ‘murican ideas to realize they could learn a lot of lessons from American professional sports to improve revenue, financial stability, and competitiveness without even scrapping promotion/relegation.

Florentino Perez: "We're considering new steps for the Super League. Perhaps the proper way would be that the top 4 teams in the domestic leagues each season would qualify for it.

Florentino Perez: "Let's talk about numbers. According to the official KPMG report, the 12 founders of the ESL lost 650 million euros during the pandemic, and this season it will reach up to 2.5 billion euros. Clubs like Bordeaux in Ligue 1 already sunk."(diaroas)

Jordan played for a team that would never get relegated, yet he is the most competitive sportsman ever.
