Emerson: Why I Want To Leave
Emerson's "come and get me" plea to AC Milan relates not just to the draw of AC Milan, but also his own desire to escape Real Madrid. Many are asking the perfectly legitimate question: why? Emerson seeks to silence his critics with a candid answer...
Emerson, pictured in happier times at the Bernabeu, is desperate to leave Real Madrid.
AC Milan's interest is well known, but the two clubs are still struggling to reach an agreement over the Brazilian ball-winner.
The midfielder can't wait to join AC Milan, but isn't merely attracted to the San Siro: he also wants out of the Bernabeu.
In a frank interview with the Gazzetta dello Sport, the player described why he's so eager to leave the Spanish capital.
"I want to go to Milan. That's my first priority. I want to leave Real Madrid because I desire life in a calmer city, and to live well."
Clearly upset with his treatment in Spain, and the goldfish-bowl lifestyle of a Real Madrid player, he clearly sees Milan as something of a greener pasture (although many would ask if he's familiar with some aspects of the Italian sporting press as well as the Spanish media.)
On the footballing side, he admitted that it was a valid question as to his unquenchable thirst to leave Los Merengues behind.
"I understand that they think it's incredible that a player doesn't want to remain in Madrid," he conceded.
"They think I'm crazy, but the truth is, they want me to leave."
Indeed, they do. porting director Pedrag Mijatovic has been negotiating the player's transfer for some time, perhaps since president Ramon Calderon's early summer pronouncement that Emerson would be leaving the club.
Finally, the player questioned his own price tag.
"The club's requesting eleven million euros for my transfer. I don't understand it. I always behave well and if I'm not going to play, it seems that the amount they want to get rid of me is excessive."
The player, then, is perhaps warning his current employers that they'd better offload him for a more agreeable fee, unless they want to be stuck with an unused player on the wage bill, as he has no intention of acting in such a way that would breach contract.
Madrid President Ramon Calderon may respectfully disagree with these remarks. Mijatovic reportedly brokered an 8m euro fee with Milanese counterpart Adriano Galliani on Tuesday, only to fail to gain the president's assent.
Emerson is under contract until 2009.
