The Brazilian midfielder was seen as the ideal substitute for Vieira, but the former Arsenal player seems to have recovered better than expected from his injury.

Emerson's move to Inter might have to wait as Coach Roberto Mancini was impressed by Patrick Vieira's recovery from the injury he suffered in the Coppa Italia final against Roma last season.

The Real Madrid player was a target of the Nerazzurri - along with Makelele and Thiago Motta - as he was seen as the player who could give some rest to the French midfielder.

However, Vieira made a good impression in his first pre-season match in the Birra Moretti trophy, thus convincing Mancini that there is no need to bring in another midfielder for the time being.

The Inter coach will continue monitoring the progress of Vieira in the coming days, but the impression is that Emerson will not join the Italian champions this summer.

Milan close on Emerson
Friday 10 August, 2007
Reports in the Italian Press suggest that Milan are close to landing Real Madrid midfielder Emerson, who could arrive next week.

El Puma was brought to Madrid by Coach Fabio Capello, who had previously worked with him at both Roma and Juventus.

However, the Brazilian’s time with the Merengues seems near to an end after being told by new boss Bernd Schuster that he was not part of his future plans.

Milan reportedly spoke to Emerson’s agent Gilmar Veloz when he was in Italy representing new Rossoneri striker Alexandre Pato and a deal could be struck as early as next week.

The San Siro outfit are keen to complete a loan deal worth £1.4m with an option to buy at the end of the next season for £4.2m, whereas Real would favour a permanent move and value Emo at £7m.

Emerson has also been paired with a switch to Inter recently, but the Italian champions have announced that they will not be bringing in any more new players this summer.

It was claimed that the Nerazzurri were planning to swoop for the former Scudetto winner as an alternative for Patrick Vieira after the knee injury problems the Frenchman has suffered.

However, Coach Roberto Mancini was impressed with Vieira’s performance in the Birra Moretti Trophy on Wednesday, when the midfielder confirmed he would be ready for the Serie A kick-off on August 26.

Milan Set For Emerson Talks

AC Milan are pressing ahead with talks to sign Emerson from Real Madrid after it was made clear that the Brazilian does not figure in Bernd Schuster's plans.

The Italian outfit are trying to convince Madrid to allow them to take the 31-year-old on loan with a view to a permanent move at the end of the season.

While los Merengues are keen to off-load the former Roma and Juve midfielder, they would rather he left on a permanent basis this summer.

Emerson has been linked with a return to Juve, as well as interesting Inter, but his agent has already met with Milan and the Rossoneri are not favourites to land him.

Milan spoke to the player's representative, Gilmar Veloz, when he was finalising a deal to bring another his clients, Alexandre Pato, to the San Siro.

Early signs are that the European champions want to pay €2m to take Emerson on loan for one year and then fork out around €6m to make the move permanent next summer.

Madrid though have stated that they want him to leave now and have stated that any interested parties will have to meet their €11m evaluation.

Barca snub sends Emerson to Milan
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milan are closer than ever to Emerson, especially after Barcelona slammed the door on their bid for Thiago Motta.

The Rossoneri seem set to bring in a new midfielder before the transfer deadline on August 31 and they have narrowed it down to two names.

If Barca’s Motta was the favoured option, then reaching him is going to be tricky after his club refused to let him join the reigning European champions.

“We will not leave him free to go where he wants,” explained director Txiki Begiristain.

“He is a player who has a certain worth on the market and also grew up in our youth system. He’s not happy? Tough, that doesn’t change matters as far as we are concerned.”

A far easier path is open to Milan for another Liga based midfielder, as Real Madrid are ready to release Emerson.

The former Roma and Juventus star, nicknamed 'Puma’, is not part of new boss Bernd Schuster’s plans.

There are reports in Italy that Emerson will be officially unveiled as a Milan player on Monday.

In order to facilitate the move, the Brazilian has accepted a pay cut from £3m to £2.3m per season, extending the contract to 2010.
