personally i just want England to lose, last time round i had just broke up with my Italian GF and still had a strong affinity for Italy, coupled with the amount of Juve players in the team and yes,i did cheer for them, but then as an avid follower of Calcio for almost 20 years Italy has been the team that i have most understanding of.
what Andy needs to understand is that if you follow Juve and Calcio in general you start to grow an attachment to certain players, you like to be entertained by certain individuals (god knows i started watching serie a for Batigol and Baggio) and when the world cup comes round you perhaps follow certain players progress, cheer for them and their team,it does not make you a citizen of their particular nation, does not make you want to live their, but then again i love Juve and god knows if i moved to Italy i wouldn't want to live there,in fact i would live in Tuscany

supporting a team in teh world cup does not make you wannabe italian,etc,95% of the time you are simply cheering for the players you know best

It's really complex when you think about it.

If I wore an Italy or a Spain jersey I'd be a fake fan.

But if I buy a Cook Islands or North Korea one, I don't think I'd get nearly as much stick

lets just get to the real point here of Andy's annoyance,it is quite simple really-
Andy is a fiercely patriotic(brainwashed) American, since America qualify for the world cup after winning through a tough group consisting of..em...Canada and El Salvador,he knows he is tied to their, ultimately failed,campaign....

us guys with no ties to any national team but a strong affinity for Italy and in particular Calcio, will bond to the team ful of players we know and recognise, when Italy won the world cup, some reflective glory was shone on those who supported Gli Azzurri....

Andy is jealous he cannot share in this

lets see where this takes us eh?

You may have a point here but the majority of Azzurri fanboys are wannabe Italians and they go referring to the Italian national team as "we".

InsouciantTerrorist actually decides what's wrong or right here, no matter if it's about who should you support or any other topic.
If you have any dilemmas about which nation you should support ,post here where are you from, where you live now and the origin of your parents and he'll make your future way.

why is it that people of nations, founded, formed and run by immigrants, think that they have the high ground on supporting your country? but at least its the correct thread, they are projecting their own insecurities regarding their nationality and their jealousy of the success that so called fan-boy glory hunters achieve
:D

A lot of people don't seem to understand that supporting a football team (or any other sports team for that matter) is mostly an emotional thing, a gut feeling. Whether that is a club team or a national team doesn't really matter. If you think it's your duty to support your (home) country, then that's just your own feelings & thoughts about the matter. Same as when you don't support your (home) country, for whatever reason that may be.

Now why do I support Juve? F*ck if I know, but I do.
Why do I (still) enjoy Calcio? Same answer.

As for national teams: it's nice if my own country does well (for once ;)), so yeah that would please me. But when you have 5 or more of your "own" players (Juve) playing for the Italian NT, it's just as nice if they do well.
And if it hadn't been for me supporting the Italian NT at the WC as an 8-year old (again, don't have any clue why I did that, must have been a gut feeling), I never would have gotten to know Calcio & I never would have fallen in love with Juve.
That's just how these matters (of the heart :D) work. Simple.

-REP The Projection thread 20.03.2010 14:57 And here's from me for mentioning REP again - Jack

So Martin, you don't want to soothe the dog suffering from rabies (Jack) instead you're advising me to turn the rep system off.

Ok I will do it, if it's gonna calm that lunatic down and bring the peace on the forums.

bring the peace? I think you're overestimating your impact on the forum a tad. However, why even have the rep on in the first place? It's stupid, I've never had it on.
