But it's a principle that we must always have at least 4 Italian players as fixed starters, and the base of Italian National team.
Young guys with this potential.. that's Rugani, Romagnoli, Verratti, Florenzi, maybe Bernardeschi and Darmian.
Should definitely have gone for Darmian.
The other thing to note about Italian players is that they are notorious for peaking later, rather than showing up on the radar past youth football, and that is mostly because there is a gap between the Primavera and pro level which needs bridging.
Not having so many Italians playing in Serie A is the main issue here, especially when some alternatives are mediocre foreigners, but those foreigners also cost less, so become a better option for the relatively poor middle-lower end clubs.
Basically you have to select from a smaller pool, maybe 50% of what it was. So before there might be 4-5 Rugani's or Romagnoli's, now there are two. There is one Verratti, who had to be exported to blossom. There are 1-2 Berardi's (maybe Bernadeschi could be this level), 1 De Sciglio or Santon or maybe Calabria, who is the next hyped fullback. Basically a couple in each position, outside of that no depth. Luckily you only need about 16 players to win a tournament.
Keepers being an exception here, for some reason Italy is churning out several with the potential to be world class or very good (Perin, Bardi, Leali, Cragno, Scuffet, Provedel, Gollini, Meret, Audero, Donnarumma).
