not to veer off subject, but is THAT really the case? pretext is not intent
Individual rights honestly don't exist much in China. It's all about orienting society and its people for the benefit and good of the Commie party. (Pardon me for invoking Vinman for a second there.)

OK, I may be exaggerating a bit. But the Western concept of individual rights is very, very foreign there. It's a cultural thing, like arranged marriages. Westerners often don't get it, as it offends their cultural sensibilities. But then if you look at enough people who have made their own marriage choices and how they turned out, arranged marriages don't seem all so terrible anymore. (My inside props to Dru here. :D)

no one ought to tell you what to think or believe, thats ridiculous attorneys ask questions to make sure the potential juror has no prejudice harming either client or state.
Self contradiction right there. If it doesn't matter what you believe, then how can you have a problem with prejudice?

"Oh, I'm a devoted Christian who takes the bible seriously. I think all homosexuals should be executed. I see this case as a sign from god as an opportunity to rid ourselves of this individual, whether or not he committed this crime. God's will trumps human law."

"You can believe what you want" is bullshit. We do tell people what to believe. Or we wouldn't send kids to school.

I was talking his example vis a vis litigation in the states, but belief in general cannot be controlled or coerced. Prejudice is in act and not idea per se, you re confusing ethics with law here. You can be the biggest bigot out there but as long as you dont break the law i have no qualms with you.

So it makes no difference to you what's happening in the neighborhood? Whether or not the laws you're made to live by have any basis in ethics?

The current laws? Like all of them? I imagine probably any person would like to change one or two.

That brings to mind the whole "recipe" of happiness. Some scientists say the less choices you have the more happy you are (convince yourself to be) with whatever you get.

I guess prisoners are the happiest people in the world. Or soldiers. Any place where all the decisions have already been made on your behalf.

Oh, but you're strapping on an explosive vest and stumbling into the conversation, Martin.

There are many examples of this phenomenon in society. Marketing research proves that people are more apt to buy with fewer choices than more, because the risk of buyer's remorse over not choosing the optimal one is greatly reduced.

As another example, Africans are notoriously the happiest people on the planet compared with every other continent.

The American legal system is non-sensical full stop. Three strikes system is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of.

That's because you don't understand the us-vs.-them mentality that's behind it. People are all supportive of laws and regulations put on other people as long as they think -- correctly or incorrectly -- it would never apply to themselves or their loved ones.

    Case in point: Patriot Act.

Exactly. I was reading about the 3 strikes law. It was introduced by a guy who's daughter was shot by a convicted criminal. All he needed were some signatures and the proposition was reviewed.
Mistake 1 - Giving everyday citizens the power to pass legislation. The reason being that they have (in this case) personal motivation and that affects the reasoning behind making a law.
Mistake 2 - Actually passing the law. It really doesn't make any sense what so ever. There are dudes in prison for life for petty theft on their third strike its fucking ludicrous. Some guy feeds you a sob story about his daughter and all of the sudden we're back to colonial times, putting people in the slammer their whole lives for stealing a loaf of bread.

:agree: America's justice system is severely flawed, and I think a lot of people are starting to realize this by how full our prison's are and how broke our government is especially in California. There is a lawsuit in the California supreme court over the horrible prison conditions because of overcrowding and underfunding, if it passes the state will be forced to release 25% of its prison population. Basically anybody who is in prison for a short term or non violent offense is getting out early, it is ridiculous how bad it is gotten, now the state is trying to steal money away from citizens because they blew all of our tax money away and refuse to stop funding illogical social programs, last speeding ticket i got ended up draining 450$ from my pocket, California is a great state, to bad our stupid ass state government is fucking it up
