Weird decision. Says it doesn't affect the 4 minarets that exist. So that must mean there's a huge push to build new ones? Otherwise why would anyone care.

And the "call to prayer" as they like to call it, amplifying the sound beyond any reasonable standards through loud speakers is just harassment. Or so I hear from people who were in Istanbul recently.

But isn't a clock more efficient instead of paying some old bum to tell you the time?
your are not too far away andy, what u r saying is logical but thats not the reason. they recently made a study about the significance of azan ( which is basically the calling of prayer which differs from country to country due to the time difference) and they realized that with every prayer calling gods name ( Allah) is mentioned through out the world 24 times,ie once every hour due to the different time zones. i know i might have not cleared it out for u but i hope i'm at least close.

The main purpose behind the loud pronouncement of adhan five times a day in every mosque is to make available to everyone an easily intelligible summary of Islamic belief. It is intended to bring to the mind of every believer and non-believer the substance of Islamic beliefs, or its spiritual ideology. Loudspeakers are sometimes installed on minarets for the purpose.

The adhan sums up the teachings of Islam: there is no God but Allah; Muhammad is God's Messenger; salvation is found through obedience to the Will of God, of which prayer is an important expression.

Which was my whole argument.

Does it state in the Quran that someone needs to call the followers to join in prayer? Don't most folks remember when they need to pray anyway?
This has nothing to do with minarets and call to prayer in particular, but the totally racist rightwing extremist majority party being "clever" in setting it as a symbol for their hate (you should hear the shit the "leader" that initiated this says, nothing short of nazi propoganda moves), I seen reports on this all week, and its nothing but pure xenophobia, Swiss doesnt have ghetto suburbs filled with predominately immigrants/muslims like other western countries (but more like immigrants/muslims live amongst swiss in general), so they couldnt use an area as a symbol of their hate, easy to poiunt, and had to be more selective and "clever" about it, in choosing something that is noticeable. And whats noticeable in every day life for Swiss? The simple mosques that are visible due to their minarets, minarets that are no different from church towers.

Corious, basically been a GENERAL policy by rightwing bigoted parties across europe (the fuckers have an continent wide association where they meet) to ease off the usual hate all foreigners schtick to now exclusively feeding on the islamophobia and targetting that as fearmongering goldmine (they did this in Sweden recently).

Its lovely for the oh so "nice" swiss to show their colours. Now they are nothing diffferent from the dannish, austrians and so on. In fact, worse because this law is takes it quite further. I mean, how ironic isnt it that this law is registered just below the law that says everyone has the right to express their religious beliefs.

Then why don't we have these monstrosities in the US?

And it's not like you can take that bum and put him on your wrist like a watch...
Well, you could put a leash on him and call him your pet.

You see thats what you've missed, the 'old bum' promises you to get into heaven, i recon if a clock did that aswell....well skies the limit.
That would be one powerful clock.

Indeed. I don't mind folks practicing their religion, but if someone built a mosque next to my house, shouting out prayers every few hours, that's where it crosses the line. It would be a noise violation.

of course its' main purpose is not telling you time. When i said it is Muslim's clock i was trying to tell that call to prayer is very important in Islamic culture. it was just a sample.
I know that, but since you pray everyday, don't you remember the times to pray anyway?

So they do it for ritual purposes. I see.

What monstrosities Burke ? If you mean minarets, you do. Seen program about it in 60 minutes, smaller towns mainly.

Generally despite intolerance like anywhere else (terrorism proganda and craze), any muslim who lives in US basically says its way more tolerant then elsewhere and they let you be. Unlike here in Europe.
