as for letting de ligt go, i'm not a fan of the idea, but it's like trying to keep pogba back in the days. if he wants to leave, he will. and honestly, he's the most expensive player of the league, while inda have 3 defenders at his level, at a much lower yearly cost.

genuine question, could you name some world beater midfielders? i couldn't name a lot that i'd sign over sms. de bruyne, pedri certainly, barella, rodri, gavi maybe. and that's all. :boh: sergej is easily a top10 midfielder in my book. if he's available we should certainly sign him.

oh yeah, i agree with the lotito part. that's what i've been saying for years, he'd rather shoot sergej than sell to agnelli. any sms talk is purely theoretical.
Tbh I haven't watched a lot of SMS in recent years but a 26 year old midfielder still playing for a mid-table Serie A club kinda sends mixed signals.

He would obviously be a massive upgrade for us but you would think that sharks across Europe would be queuing up to sign him if they truly thought he's a talent that they can't miss out on.

The best midfield talents in Europe play for some of the biggest clubs. Meanwhile SMS entering his prime still plays for Lazio. Just saying...

With De Ligt, we ( :fab3: ) sorta fucked ourselves by making him such a big earner immediately. It's going to always be hard to renew him, unless he is ok with his wages remaining the same. Maybe he wouldn't have come here if we didn't offer him so much, but then that only means we never could've really afforded him to begin with.
€8M + €4M 'easily achievable bonuses' was absolute fuckery

Tici ran this club like an oil team.

barzagli, an easily world class player under conte and allegri played for wolfsburg in his prime.

sorry buddy, i don't buy that argument. lotito's excessive demands already scared away some buyers, that doesn't tell anything about the player himself.

again, who'd you pick over him?

SMS should be considered simply because he's got the perfect characteristics for Allegri. It's like Vlahovic 2.0 move, you give the coach a player he always wanted, someone who is at the top of the list.

Then, Lotito will ask for 80m and I don't think we'd be able to spend this much.

And I don't buy the excessive demands argument either. Clubs like PSG, City, Chelsea etc are ready to drop 80-100M on centre backs/fullbacks without any hesitation.

Incidentally, clubs that have shown the most interest are Italian clubs. We have scouts all over Europe closely watching these players. If they truly thought SMS was worth it, he would be playing at Real Madrid or United right now rather than spending his prime years at Lazio.

Who I'd pick over him? I don't have a list. I even said that I would happily welcome here.

My point was that I wouldn't swap De Ligt for SMS.

Here's what I think. I think De Ligt will go on to become a generational CB meanwhile I don't think SMS will reach the same heights. Time will tell whether I'm right or wrong. That's all there is to it really...

Well he will definitely demand something around that amount, but he will also probably want to sell. Let's not forget that in the summer SMS will only have 2 years left on contract. Doubt they will be able to extend this with new contract so will probably aim to sell him this summer.

You have a good argument but it must be said that after his breakthrough season which was 2017/18, Lotito did ask some crazy sums for him. I remember that after the World Cup he was heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, and they said that even Jorge Mendes tried to persuade Lotito to sell him to Madrid but Lotito asked for some crazy sum (I believe it was 120 million + 20 million in bonuses) which was obviously too much.

Then the next season his performances did suffer a bit so the interest in him from other clubs cooled down a little bit.

Now when he will soon be turning 27 and with only two more years left in his contract, I think that he will reject any form of contract extension with Lazio. Therefore, I think Lotito will look to cash on him in the summer.

well you said that he wasn't a world beater, i thought you'd happily name some world beaters then.

as i said i consider this an academic discussion, and not because we don't have any influence on the club's operation anyway lol, but because de ligt will want to leave, and lotito won't sell to us, so next season we won't have either players. i consider de ligt is the best young cb already, so i'd keep him if it was possible financially, but in the current financial climate i think we'll accept the money and invest it elsewhere.

I do agree. And I don't agree.

He is perfect player for Allegri but I think majority of coaches would literally welcome Sergej in a 3 man midfield. I think we're in pole position to sign the guy if we want to do so. And I think we can sign him unless we focus on getting Zaniolo in the summer because we won't move for both.

I also think our priority will be Zaniolo.

A midfield of

--------jorginho------
------loca------sms--

Is world class imo we get to upgrade every dept in our midfield instantly. And i believe playing wingers with a lone striker is more viable than dybala at SS or treq.
That midfield is lacking defensively, Allegri will always want at least one of his soldiers in there to do the dirty work.

I still think SMS somehow has untapped potential. He needs to play beside Vlahovic, not necessarily run around in midfield. In that case, I don't really like the fit with Dybala anyways because Dybala needs CMs that get the ball for him.

4-3-3 is fine but SMS should be in attack as much as possible and the wingers can work more to get the ball, IMO. So Dybala doesn't fit anywhere and should be sacrificed.

I should have said "welcome Sergej with a 3 man midfield*

But yeah, Sergej surely needs to play more upfront to bring his quality.
