Yeah even this season we've played with Mandzo, Ronaldo and Dybala/Berna starting at the same time for most of the season. Pretty sure that in some games Dybala/Berna have played between the lines behind Ronaldo and Mandzo when we attack. Then defensively we always change to 4-4-2. Why does it make us worse in defense if we attack with 4-3-1-2 vs 4-3-3?
Cuz MikeM hates outdated non-winger based formations.
Not sure why he thinks 4-3-3 means we will suddenly be more solid defensively. Half the top teams that use it don’t ask their wingers to track back much anyways, so I guess they are defending with only 7...

Then the issue of when the CAM goes into the box. It helps to be Vidal who goes for a header and then sprints back beside Pirlo. Just think how we got murdered by Ajax with 2 banks of four but then eliminate even one more player so it's a bank of 3 and a bank of 4? There's no way IMO.
This is not even talking about the attack, which is so much harder. Again, imagine De Sciglio with the ball and how does he pass it out of our 3rd? Well it's going to have to be a striker that drifts all the way wide to receive the ball, in which case he's playing as a winger anyway! So put a winger there!

^^^ So if you pass to the fullback, either a CM or a ST has to act as a winger. You can't avoid passing the ball into wide areas. So why would we want players uncomfortable in those areas, constantly in those areas? Just put a winger. Preferably Hazard.
Edit: Also really hard to press the opponent. What happens when they pass to their fullback? A striker or CM has to go there. So just put a winger, e fatta.

Some of these teams have wingers that don't exactly put in challenges, I agree. But they cover (like literally just occupy space) the wide areas so the CMs can all stay compact in the centre of the pitch. In a 4-3-1-2, how do you help De Sciglio defend? You have to bring a CM all the way out wide? It's so hard. That's why it's uncommon.

I just don’t have as big an issue with 4-3-1-2 given the right players to play it. Right now, we have nowhere near the midfield strength to play it. It’s also a formation that creates a lot through the middle of the pitch as was seen during Allegri’s first year here, which was a pleasure to watch.
Seeing as Ronaldo rarely positioned wide as an actual winger at Madrid, that team could hardly be said to be playing a 4-3-3 in terms of how they were actually positioned on the pitched. It looked much more like a lopsided 4-4-2 when Bale/another winger played, or like a 4-3-1-2 I attack when Isco played.

Anyways, I’m fine with whatever gets the most of our squad. Perhaps that would have been 4-3-3 this year if Costa hadn’t gone full retard... or perhaps it would have been something a little more 4-4-2/4-2-1-3 shape with our lack of CMs and surplus of attackers.
Would like to see Berna as a CAM still in 4-2-1-3/3-1 or as a wide mid in 4-4-2. Have a 4 man attack with Ronaldo, Kean, Costa, Berna all on the pitch together would be something I’d love to see.
If Ramsey, Ndombele and Can are the runners we won't have any problems at all. Even Pjanić is a better runner than Pirlo because of age.
And I especially don't see the concerns with build up, getting the strikers involved etc. 4312 is when we played our best football and in which Dybala flourished if he stays. Zidane also used it a lot at RM, so CR knows what it's about.
It also uses FBs overlapping a lot so we could see the old Sandro again

Dybala, Higuain or Cancelo for Icardi?

It’s been reported that Juventus could consider offering one of Paulo Dybala, Gonzalo Higuain or Joao Cancelo plus money in exchange for Mauro Icardi.
According to newspaper La Repubblica, the possibility for any potential move could be discussed tonight after the Derby d’Italia game between the sides at the San Siro.
Calciomercato.com report that Bianconeri sporting director Fabio Paratici would like to bring Icardi to Turin, but neither he nor Inter CEO Beppe Marotta will make the first move.
Dybala has been suggested as part of an exchange for several weeks now, but La Joya seems reticent to make the move to Inter.
Higuain is likely to be sent back to Juve after his disappointing loan spells at Milan and then Chelsea.
It’d be a return to Inter for Cancelo, who was at San Siro last season on loan with €40m option to buy from Valencia.
Should the Portuguese full-back return to the Nerazzurri, it would rule out a move for Manchester City’s Brazilian defender Danilo, who they have been recently linked to.
Meanwhile, Icardi’s wife and agent Wanda Nara has been adamant in recent days that she and her husband are 100% staying at Inter as they have just bought some valuable real estate in the Repubblica area of the city.
The family plan to move there in September and Wanda will transfer her office to the area. Without any other concrete offers, it can’t be ruled out that the 26-year-old will stay in Milan for another year.
