Alves leaving is a huge blow. Replacing him is tough but what we did in order to replace him is quite horrible IMO. Do you know when are we going to win the CL with De Sciglio as a starter? Never. Not in a million years. I also expect a fullback to come, which seems unlikely at the moment, but we'll see what happens. That alone is a huge downside in our team.
Btw, your expectations from Costa are high. I sort of understand that. But you gotta see the other side of it too. He's NOT like he used to be as he turned into a brainless runner. He might explode, yeah, it won't be a huge surprise. But he might also turn out to be decent and nothing special, as he was for Bayern when fans were mad and wanted him out. So far he's not a top material.
Yes, Bonucci had to be shipped off. You're right, we had similar options for our 3 man defense but... back then we had option. If somebody got injured we could easily switch. But now, no, if somebody gets injured we're completely fucked up. Buying a massive CB is not a bad idea because Barzagli is 36. Rugani will surely get his chance simply because Chiellini has problems with injuries while Benatia is made of glass -- which makes our CB spot VERY fragile.
That's totally fine. But signing Matuidi won't solve shit and it would be a horrible move.
You know why this mercato is 5-6/10? It's just average. Look at the names we signed. Polak (good), De Sciglio (reject), Bentancur (potential), D.Costa (reject/question mark/revival), Berna (big potential). We have defense fragile, our mid is not solved and we're relying on question marks for the wing. IMO this looks like a mercato that can be done by Inter and Milan. This Inter and Milan, not the old teams.

Strengthened our Attack
Our Midfield remains the same as it was in May with the exception of Bentancur.
In hindsight, you can argue that doesn't look too that bad. However, I'd say we're at 6/10 as our biggest strength has always been our defence.

The thing is a lot of fans want us to upgrade the team massively while we're a team that played 2 of the last 3 CL finals and we don't have hundreds of millions to spend. It's almost impossible.
We needed wingers the most, we adressed it.
We needed CM strength, we already have Marchisio coming back and we're looking for another addition. Btw; if you expect Kroos type of players; you're always going to be disappointed.
We lost Dani & Bonucci. The latter needs no replacement, when every position is covered with 2 players. No other European top team has 4 CBs of that calibre, none. Injuries can be dealt with. As for Dani, yes Desci would be underwhelming but we're probably going to add someone here with Desci being able to cover all positions at the back in an emergency situation.
PS: we definitely upgraded in the GK department.

I feel we are weaker than last season, our midfield centre clearly needs someone capable there. It was our first area we were linked with this summer , and it sound like Nzonzi was done deal at one point.
Defense was the strongest , we keep playing the card the best defense in Europe and losing 2 out of 5 starters and having MDS doesn't look so comfortable , but if we sign a real midfield powerhouse we can actually shield the defense well .
First area we need to focus for the rest of this summer campaign is surely the midfield and Beppe needs to sign whoever Allegri identified as his first choice in that area.

I agree that Pjanic, Marchisio (if he returns back to his former form) and Khedira are fine on the midfield, but we need still an experienced CM or starting caliber who can jump in when when someone injures, because our depth is very weak. Bentancur is a question mark yet, Rincón+Lemina+Sturaro is not an answer under an important match coming from the bench,
