Wow. What a messed up match that worked out for us in the end. We could have lost this one quite easily -- if not for a lucky break with Diamoutèné getting sent off on a pretty lame second yellow -- and meanwhile Balzaretti narrowly escaped his second.
This match had DD's imprint on it, though, which I really liked: a lot of young players getting the chance to prove themselves alongside tested veterans.
It was pretty much a dead even match until about 60' when Juve started to look really shaky at the back. A few opportunities in the first half by Juve were generally squandered on poor finishing. Who would have thought that our best and most consistent finisher on the night would have been De Ceglie?!
Then Lecce came to life. By the time Osvaldo was subbed in, Boumsong was having a brief-but-deadly complete lapse on the pitch ... so Lecce's goal was coming.
In the end we could credit the reversal of Bojinov's fortunes between halves, where he created two goals out of practically nothing to put us up top. Even the man advantage didn't really contribute to those goals -- Boji created out of what little we got when he suddenly showed accuracy and form that he lacked all day.
And from there, we created lots of man-up chances, squandered them horribly (Palladino perhaps being the worst offender), and then making a couple as time was about to expire.
Mirante - 6 - Showed good instincts. Covered the ball well (unlike Abbiati in his early matches with us last season). But not tested a lot. Goal wasn't his fault as he was hung out to dry by an offside trap collapse.
Balzaretti - 6 - Some good defensive play. An amazing deep hook that almost got our first goal if not for the woodwork. There were a couple times he should have crossed instead of taken the lame shot.
Boumsong - 5 - A generally decent game was marred by several minutes of awful, clumsy play. Unfortunately, when you're playing defense, playing a solid 80 minute game is only enough to lose it for your team.
Kovac - 6 - Generally decent match. Didn't seem as fast as he could be, or at least as he needed to be, at times.
Birindelli - 6.5 - Our stand-in captain played a good match (even with so much youth and inexperience out on the pitch). What he lacked in speed these days, he made up for in some good offensive drives and a few good stops.
Paro - 6 - He seemed to be fielded more in the destroyer role, which he needs to improve on to be entirely effective. But he largely handled it well today, particularly in the first half.
Marchisio - 7 - This may be controversial, because he was the first DD subbed, but I thought he was solid today. Some killer accurate passes, excellent ball pursuit, and a display of good footwork to win challenges and work around a defense that often packed it in the center of the pitch. One of our most effective players when he was on the pitch. When Maresca was in good form, he had matches like Marchisio had today.
Nedved - 6.5 - Relentless. Great pursuit of the ball, and continual attack when we needed to create something. Good ball distribution too. He was a real fighter out there today.
Camoranesi - 7 - He had his overall poor passes here and there, but overall he was our most consistently dangerous threat on the pitch throughout the match. Unselfish play and often found a way to get open with the ball to distribute it. My vote for MOM.
Bojinov - 6.5 - It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Bojinov was arguably the "goat" of the first half. Dreadful finishing. Always seemed to be timed too late or in the wrong position. But he redeemed himself in a massive way in the second half, practically single-handedly giving Juve not only the level draw but also the lead that we held on to through the end. I'd give his first half a 4.5 and his second half a 7.5. So call it 6.5 because we got the win because of it. (And the Romeo T-shirt was such a touching, loyal team gesture.)
Palladino - 5.5 - I have to agree with someone else's comments here -- Palladino seemed to lack confidence. He was confronted with so many opportunities where he missed by inches that it had to wear on him, and I was worried that frustration would really set in. It was nice to see him redeem himself to a degree before the end, and you could tell from his teammates they supported him and recognized the mutual joy in him breaking his streak of poor finishing in the match. Some good play, some poor play. He needs consistency, because he seems to definitely have the raw talent. And what a nice assist to De Ceglie.
Subs:
Venitucci - 6 - Involved relatively late, so I can't give him too much credit, but I liked what I saw of his ballwork in traffic. In fact, for a moment it looked as if Marchesio simply switched jerseys.

All of which are compliments today.
Chiellini - NR - Not many touches, coming late into the game. A mixed bag.
De Ceglie - 6.5 - Even later than Chiellini on the pitch, but he made about as much as you can make of such a short time on the pitch. Is this guy something like 15 years old? Anyway, great run with Palladino and a fantastic finish. And what a goal celebration from the rest of the team when he nailed it -- it was like a Juve orgy down there. :toast:
DD - 6.5 - Forza DD for rotating in youth players. I would expect nothing less from his pedigree, and I am looking forward to more of a culture of young player development at Juve. The team seems to respond well to him also -- he seems to have earned their respect quite well. While I disagreed with his sub of Marchesio, who was one of our best players on the night, overall I enjoyed his player choices.
