OK, I've held off posting and reading here until after I watched the recorded match -- as to not bias any opinions I write down here.
Boy, what a crappy game. No real finishing strength. Real problems controlling the ball. This would have been a disaster had this match been played in Bergamo. But thankfully we found a way to get all three points. Struggle, struggle, struggle.
I don't have much to say about the overall team performance other than we were constantly being disrupted and weren't playing off each other very well. The teamwork was probably most poor of all in this one. Ranieri made the right decision by putting in Del Piero and Marchionni right away at the half -- our left service was quite good with Molinaro (did I just say that?), but our right service was dreadful between Palladino, Iaquinta and Zebina.
Player ratings:
Buffon - 7 - Solid. Not a mistake. Not tested a ton, but did just about everything right.
Zebina - 5 - Solid first half wasted by a disastrous second half. In the first half he got duped once on defense, nicely recovered by Chiellini. But he did some of his own moves and won balls. By the second half he was hacking, got an idiotic yellow card, and totally blew his marker in the closing minutes that almost cost us two points on a late set piece.
Chiellini - 7.5 - Not tested a lot, but rock solid for what he was called to do. Covered for other defensive screw-ups. The most complete, flawless match on the team.
Legrottaglie - 6.5 - Got beat once (recovered by Chiellini), but otherwise did well on challenges, coming out to meet the ball and reverse the direction of play, etc. Good game.
Molinaro - 6.5 - Wow. He's improving, and last weekend I thought he had the match of his short Juve career. On the downside, he twice blew defensive coverage on Ferreira Pinto. He also needs to improve his sense of being onsides with the rest of the squad when it comes to his runs. But without question, by far, he was providing the best service on the entire club today. Some of his crosses may have been a little soft, but they were accurate. Trez just didn't do much with them. Also a couple good defensive pokes. And he runs a lot -- like a bunny, as you'd expect from a young player out to prove himself. He covered what seemed like the most area of any player on the pitch today. I no longer hate this guy after his past 2-3 match performances.
Nedved - 7 - While Chiellini played a better match, Neddy of course made the biggest difference in the end: MOM. Sure, a lot of it came come down to one late play. But Neddy has a knack for that and he kept at it and ultimately was most responsible for the three points. He's had better matches in terms of pursuit and ball distribution over the past month as well, but he did enough to keep the engine going and get us the win.
Zanetti - 7 - Generally pretty solid. Some nice defensive headers and some of his offensive feeds were better than they have been of late.
Nocerino - 6.5 - If not for some of his rookie-like mistakes, he could have vied for the MOM. An engine out there and relentless.
Palladino - 5 - Floundered. Lost the ball often. Bad crosses.
Trezeguet - 5.5 - While many of his shots were accurate, they had no power today. Everything was preventable.
Iaquinta - 5.5 - Added little to the right side in terms of service, and offered little in terms of teamwork today.
Subs:
Del Piero - 6.5 - Added a well-needed creative shot in the arm on the pitch in the second half. Some good set piece kicks too.
Marchionni - 4 - A complete disaster. He was a black hole -- taking up space, sucking up possession and turning the ball over instantaneously. One of the most awful performances I have seen from a Juve sub this season.
Tiago - NR - Not on long enough, really.
Coach:
Ranieri - 5 - Good sub choices at the half -- though I cannot fully blame him for how bad Marchionni stunk up the pitch. But otherwise the team wasn't focused and showed little preparation nor teamwork. And the late Tiago sub -- why? What was that for? Got lucky this round, that's for sure.
