A couple of quick observations of this match, from the other side of the pond.
First, this 3-4-1-2 formation, for the time being, looks like it could work very well. It should only be more succesful once Thuram comes back, and assuming that he will be playing RB, will make their attack more dangerous.
maresca needs to be a full-time player. He is the first legitamte offensive/defensive young threat in midfield that Juve has had in quite a while. He is showing a complete game.
Miccoli, as well, needs to be on the first team. Is it me, or when Miccoli and DiVaio(who didn't play all that well today) are in the same lineup, they seem to carry the ball more into the attacking zone, instead of waiting for someone to feed it to them?
It looks like they have more responsibility, and I, for one, like that. It changes the look of their attack, as you see more 1-2 passes, through runs, and less crosses/long ball play out of Juve. They can create their own opportunities, and if DP ever gets his form back, a DP-Miccoli combination could prove deadly.
Whatever Flu bug hit neddy today, make sure he doesn't get better any time soon. Best game this season for him, IMO. Although he was supposed to play the support role behind DV and Miccoli, it seemed that he stayed on the right side of the pitch for most of the match, and he was highly effective.
If this new formation is going to be our long term solution, two things need to happen.
1) Appiah must be paired in Central midfield with Maresca, once he regains his form. I see less and less of Tacchinardi as the matches go on. Appiah could become Maresca's "safety net" if Enzo happens to stray too far in the offensive zone and can't recover on defense. There were a couple of situations in this match where Tacchi took the wrong angle on a player, and they ended up pushing down the sidelines and creating opportunities. Or, for the time being, pairing davids there would also be a short term solution.
2) In the long run, Juve is going to need some younger legs back in that central defense. Although there was a clean sheet today, it's possible that a healthy Adriano could've found the back of the net, especially when parma came out with guns blazing early in the 2nd half. Putting that kind of responsibilty on Iuliano, Ferrara, and Montero may be too much too ask over the long haul.
All in All, an excellent performance, and hopefully, Juve has turned the corner.
I will now proceed to take the "WTF are you talking about, you stupid Yank!!?!?!?", comments from the audience.
