Will be more critical here.
Generally, play was scrappy. The last 20mins was the kind of kickabout you see in training – a complete farce.
Defence was ok. The 3 CBs with adequate covering by the wingbacks had some semblance of security due to numbers. I thought it bordered on being excessive since at any one time, Juve had 6-7 players camping in their defensive half. Parma’s threat was almost exclusively down their right (Marchionni) Whatever half-chances they had came from our confusion in the box.
Midfield was its usual dour self. In a way, it was Ancelotti’s 2000-2002 revisited. Maresca and Tach sat very deep. Wing overlaps and longball were what passed off as organized buildup. Why didn’t Parma clamp down the way Inter/Lazio showed them to? The answer’s probably the same as the one when you watch them for the last 20mins. As expected, Maresca added range while Miccoli (left), Nedved (right) often dropped back wide to fetch and carry with reasonable effect. There was a huge gap in place of the normal link you’d expect between the midfield and attack. Apart from a few nice interplays, the attack still looks fragmented. With the very flattering attention Nedved has been receiving of late, I’ve a feeling his health won’t last very long.
Forwards. Considering the kind of support they received from midfield, they deserved a lot of credit. Miccoli took his chances superbly while DP placed his perfectly but Nedved’s 1st-timer was the best of the lot. DV’s purple patch is officially over. Where he used to miss mostly chances, he went one better this time by missing everything. Even Zalayeta looked better. It might be worthy to note that all 4 goals were scored when their defence was more or less on the backfoot. While that reaffirms our prowess in open spaces, therein lies our limitation too, unfortunately. On 180mins of evidence, Parma and Olympiakos were good morale boosters and should be considered as just that. On a harsher tone, apart from the scoreline, its nothing radically different from any of the games in our last 16-match unbeaten streak.
Individually,
Buffon (5) – Looked a little dodgy perhaps due to not having to make a single save.
Ferrara (6.5) – Calming influence and good all-round game.
Montero (6.5) – Kept his cool and did (relatively) well defensively.
Iuliano (6.5) – Not as prominent as the rest but well done all the same.
Birindelli (6.5) – Gave 100%.
Zambrotta (6.5) – A little disappointing with his usual high standards. A little perplexed by him crossing when there’s nobody upfront for him to center to. Would have done better cutting in and shooting from long-range.
Maresca (6.5) – Eager to impress and maybe held on to the ball for too long. A little slow and perhaps too indulgent. Tried to do too much at times and lost possession in very dangerous positions. Offensively, a highly encouraging outing; has the vision, technique and capability in delivery. Workrate and defensive game needs to be improved before Tach can be dislodged.
Tach (7) – The anchor role in the 3-4-1-2 is his natural habitat.
Nedved (7.5) – Fantastic workrate and did everything from defending, assisting to scoring. That, from a man who’s supposed to be suffering from flu.
Miccoli (7) – Dangerous and entertaining. Great finishes.
DV (1) – Sh!te.
Zalayeta (6) – Came on as a sub and for a man of his build, had great skill and touches.
DP (6.5) – Apart from the goal and assist, nothing much else.
Conte (no rating) – Not enough time to judge but a mighty insult to Davids, who was warming up before Lippi decided to shuff Conte in instead after going 4-0 up.
