If I was a youth player, the last team I'd choose to play for is Juventus. We are the absolute worst club in the world when it comes to nurturing young talent or giving it a chance.
What will it take for us to change course? Probably nothing.
Our youth system was not impressive. But it was more of that we hardly snatched up "fenomeno" or "champion" youngsters who had the abilities to break into Juve's first team than that we were bad in giving them chances. We produced farily amount of decent players who can play in Serie A and Serie B.
For example, Pandev came from Inter's youth system but he didn't even make a single aapearance for Inter. I don't think we give 0 opportunity to a youngster of the level of Pandev.
Although some Juve fans have great hope for some Juve Primavera players, our youngsters are usually not considered very highly by the Azzurri fans who pay a lot of attention to the Italian youth system and very few of our players are selected by the Italian youth team, even those ones called by the important Italian national youth team such as U-17, U-19 and U-21 (U-18 and U-20 are just not important), they don't play an important part in them (with Giovinco, Criscito, De Ceglie and Marchisio's generation the only exception in recent years, who played important roles in an important national youth team, Italian U-21)
But even playing for U-21 doesn't equal that these youngsters are definity good enough for a Serie A team because very small percentage of the youngsters can survive in the end. Imagine Palombo was an important force for the Italian U-21 that won the champion of the U-21 tournament and the best team he can make is la Samp.
Not to mention, we are in the era when Italy has run out of talents so the best of the bunch of averagely bad ones don't have the quality of players born in 70'. Immobile, hyped up by Juve related media, was rarely called up by any Italian national youth team, Marrone was a sub in a Italian U-21 that coudn't win Bosnia U-21. Ariaudo started some matches for the Italian U-21 and was benched and gave his position to players like Bellusci nd Ogbonna. Libertazzi who is our only Primavera player born in 1992, played as a sub in the Iatlian U-17. etc etc.
And the rest of the players who are not been selected by the Italian national youth team are even less talanted than the previous ones. For example, Castiglia, hyped up terribly by some Juvemedias (don't know why. Maybe because he used to be the Captain of the Primavera?) was never in any Italian national youth team.
I'm not saying these youngsters are terrible. But they are not that good like some Juve media (such as Tuttosport, offside.com) hyped them to be. These medias are really exaggerating.
One may argue that our Primavera team has gotten very good results. Well, they are an averagely good team and are strong as a whole but lack impressive players who can break into the first team (based on what mentioned previously about the national youth team and Azzurri fans' opinion which may be not convinced enough for you as one might argue that you never know until you watch them enough and so on...but no matter).
One thing is some Primavera teams, such as Fiorentina, gets good results by playing players born in 93 and 92 (Carraro, Babarcar, Iemmelo) as their main force while ours are made of players born 90 and a small percent of 91 (ones like Belcastro and Giandonato), the only 92 is Libertazzi (born in January of 90 and is not even a starter in our Primavera). We should get good results. it's 90s VS 92s... Foti (born in 88) was an absolute fenomeno in the Primavera league of the first half of this season. So good results not definitely =/= talented playes in the youth level because the one with mature physics has a huge advantage. (See how good some African teams are in their youth level).
The reasons why we can't snatch up better players I'm not sure. One thing is in Moggi's time our tradition was buying young players who had already made a name for himself in the professional teams and we hardly investigated heavily in players who was playing only for the youth level and this hasn't changed (Even Yago, Ekdal and Co. came here for free.) How can you get the best of the players if you don't spend?
Right now Inter was one of the best Italian team with talented youth players and they really really bought a lot of youngsters and most of them were eliminated. We only saw the survival ones, of course. I bet we don't even get half numbers of what Inter buys in youngsters and we don't pay for any youngster who is considered as future champion neither.
Milan from last year began to invest in youngsters. They bought Beretta(born in 1992) for 2.3 millions. We haven't spent large sums of money for a yongster for years. If not mistaken, Del Piero cost us 1M in 1993 which was really a huge price for a yongster of his age and he is a real fenomeno unlike these hyped "fenomenos" who join us for free now.
