Shelbourne were 1 match away from the Champions League group stage a few years ago. They drew with Deportivo in the home leg but lost in Spain in the second leg.
I think we're at the same level as the SPL clubs (bar Rangers and Celtic obviously) already.
This year:
: St. Pats went further in Europe than Motherwell this year
: and they made it to the same round as Hearts
: They knocked out a Russian team in the same round as Aberdeen were hammered 8-1 by a Czech Republic side who were thrashed by Everton in the next round
And Pats are nowhere near the best team in our league.
: Falkirk were knocked out by a team from Liechtenstein in the same round that both Pats and Derry qualified.
Last year:
: While Rangers were knocked out by a Lithuanian side who were knocked out in the next round by Aalborg, Drogheda were a leg (Adam Hughes' leg!) away from knocking out Dynamo Kiev, who went on to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League and made the UEFA Cup Semi Final in the same year.
: St Pats were unlucky to be knocked out in the UEFA Cup by Hertha Berlin, in the same round Nancy comfortably knocked out Motherwell.
And that's without even mentioning Derry's 5-1 hammering of Gretna in Scotland, or Bohs knocking out Aberdeen in the UEFA Cup in 2000..
The only things that separates us are the infrastructure, facilities and the Irish media's lack of interest.
Most of Scotland's bad results are down to a lack of match sharpness due to having to play early in the season or, in some cases, before the season has started.
I don't watch Irish football, so I don't know how they compare.

The rumour mill here is linking Vinny Faherty and John Russell with Hibs. They were at Galway United this season (season has just ended), but like all the other players their contracts have ended.
It could be complete BS but kind of I doubt it because there were rumours linking Vinny with Aberdeen a while ago and Russell is one of the best young players in the league.
Vinny is a striker. Hard worker, good at holding up the ball and bringing others into play. He has a poor goalscoring record and his finishing leaves a lot to be desired though. He's 22.
Russell is an attacking midfielder. He's only 24 but is/was captain. Very good, clever player.
Was a shocking challenge, the guy is leading with a straight foot at head height. Although the contact is minimal, you cannot go in for a challenge like that.
at the time i thought it was harsh but on reflection it was extremely dangerous and he really cannot have any complaints
on another note it is becoming extremely disheartening watching us completely dominate teams and fail to take points. i doubt very much whether Csaba will get the cash he wants for the striker we desperately need and i see Wallace,Stewart and Driver being sold on soon with youngsters being drafted in to replace them by the inevitable new manager and a long struggle will ensue this season

Thats largely been the story of St. Johnstone's season too.
When I watched the highlights I could not believe the first half, Hearts were all over the Saints and had some great chances and looked to have pinned them back. I was thinking how did they not win this!?
Second half looked to be the complete opposite where St. Johnstone had all the chances.
But all that I got to see was from BBC's highlights which aren't great!
