I hate to be too much of a critic, but IMHO this kind of 'project' shouldn't depend on a pool of people from a long-term point of view. To quote an overused expression, "too many cooks spoil the broth".

I'm not here to question anyone's integrity here, but human nature is such that people will inevitably fall behind, whether it comes to maintenance, payment etc. I think Martin understands this concept too, which is why he'd rather have one person ultimately responsible for the operation of the site.

It's great that people are so genuinely concerned about keeping this place alive, but at the same time it'd be a horrible shame to see tempers flaring and people leaving if disagreements (inevitably) arose.

I must admit that it was quite a burden off my shoulders to hear that Greg had some experience in website maintenance too (and moreso than myself to boot), and I'd definitely be up for partnering up with one or two experienced people to keep this machine oiled, but unfortunately, I think my contribution in terms of time would be rather limited at this point in time. As a long-term solution though, it sounds pretty good to me.

Does'nt one need to know the figures involved at that level? I mean there has to be a minimum bidding point, right ? (an approximation if not anything else). Its just to give us an idea over the complexity of the situation.

I know a bit about runnin a website and a friend of mine has a local website, and its pretty succesful, well its more of a community.

Unfortunately I dont think I can spare that money just yet coz I have other investments to fund but if nobody's goin to, then I might just try to find a way to buy.

So far I'd just like to get an idea of about how much before I show serious intentions. I love this forum and although I don't post much (can't always find the time), I do read alot of what is written here. So if there is a possibility that I buy the site, I will see what I can arrange.

Absolutely in agreement here, Graham. I think having a handful of folks who can pitch in is a good thing -- better than the single-point-of-failure problem where only one, or even two, people might otherwise feel like they can't go on holiday without the site coming to its knees.

But too many is a mess. Communication structures have to change to address that paths might cross too often. People might be in the same things at once and step on each others' toes. Roles and responsibilities become a complex multi-point problem where no one is really quite sure who is doing what. Rules get lax and/or harder to enforce. Security and integrity grow to become issues. Etc...

(As you might sense, I think enough about these things that someone was foolish enough to make me manager in the industry some time ago. But the good news is that they didn't scoop all of my brains out yet -- I can still do a lot of hands-on technical things. )

I'm in. :cheesy: Sounds like Graham is to an extent at least. If we keep things between 3 and maybe 4-5 tops, I think we'll be in decent shape.

Personally, I'm actually pretty excited about this. Just today I caught an old, beat-up, white van driving down the Embarcadero of San Francisco, with Juve bumper stickers all over the back and a Juve frame plate, etc. I don't know how things are around you all, but Juve fans can seem few and far between around here -- so I always light up when I see that there's "life" out there around here. This all reminded me of how I see my part as being an avid local Juve supporter out here, of playing an active role in helping those connections that otherwise seem very rare, and of nurturing a community of like-mindedness as we have here at Juventuz (OK, Milanistas and Romanistas... I also have a Lega Calcio thing in general too. It wouldn't be a proper life as a juventino if we couldn't beat you for the Scudetto. ).
