I didn't say it's easy, I just meant I don't see any legal basis to return them.
Current legal basis is to freeze them until sanctions are ongoing. The sanctions are there until the war is ongoing. The funds or the real estate or any other assets arent "taken" by the authorities. The owners just cant sell them, thats it, thats the scope of eu sanctions and its the same in uk. As I said, there are some discussions on whether and how to confiscate, but that would need a completely new legal mechanism.

That's where you're mistaken, the sanctions will stay until Russia becomes a civilized country (or at least the Putler's regime falls).

If putin is removed from power, it's a simple question of where did you get the initial investment? They can easily show it was criminal and seize hia properties for good.

Seizing Putins assets sure, yes. But over 1000 persons/entities are sanctioned at this point and not all are politicians. Its not as simple for someone like papa Mazepin or Mordashov.

I thought the same when I found out about it. I recommend watching the video I posted, it’s short but good insights about the importance of the war ship. Serious blow for Russia once again.
I have a passing interest in this sort of thing - it would be a lot more of a blow if and when Ukraine have more fighter jets in their arsenal.

No i meant his cronies, if the acquiring of the first billions can't be justified legally with paperwork they have grounds to seize it all, money laundering laws are vague enough to convict someone like abramovic. And per UN charter they don't even need a criminal conviction. Money is an illusion.

Abramovich goes back to 90ties, he was Yeltsins friend. Mordashov also started out at about the same time. AML laws in some countries like Netherlands indeed are progressive (while others like the Swiss still suck), but they dont allow you to demand detailed paperwork from 30-40 years back and confiscate based on a feeling.

They will declare that the only way to make that much money in Putin's Russia is by being his associate. Easy peazy.
Thats what has allowed them to freeze the funds. It wont be enough to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the funds are criminal just because the owners support Putin.

"There is no statute of limitations for money laundering violations under UK law."
