I did say I noted how Cruyff looked so enthuiastic (after being and looking pissed off with ajax's shameful loss) in the studios of nederland 2 when he analyzed and sat through the ajax match and the highlights of the other matches.

"I can't remember a player catching my eye like Rooney has. It has to be 23 years ago when a young Marco van Basten made his debut for Ajax.

"There are striking similarities between the two in terms of natural talent and I have no doubt Rooney has all the qualities to become one of the best strikers in many years.

of course, cruyff is an idiot who knows nothing of football and has been caught in the hype. He is mistaking a manboy with no other qualities than running around and manhandling defenders to score tapins for a player in potential better than Henry, Ronaldo and as impressive a natural talent as van Basten.

What was Cruyff smoking when he said this? Rooney doesn't have an ounce of Henry's style and flair, and certainly not his dribbling ability. Now even former greats are falling into the hype. What is this world coming to!?

Oh come on!!!, Rooney has just as good style and flair as Henry, dont judge it by how they looks (rooney looks like a pig) but by the way they play, Rooney is very good, there is no hype.

the moment i saw the words van basten and rooney mentioned in the same sentence i could just imagine how cruyff has been sucked into all this hype like all the other fans i've met.

he hasn't even been able to perform against the mediocre clubs he's played against for man utd.while he was at everton he played badly against lousy opposition but all that everyone could remember of his time there is that goal against arsenal.

Why is that for a player to be rated highly by some of you he has to come from a certain part of the world or play for Juventus?
How can a player at 18 score 4 goals in the European championship, a hattrick on his debut for a big club like Man united in the biggest club competion in the world , be over rated?

What more should he do?? I know sign for Juventus or suddenly become Italian , then he would be rated as the next best thing

If Miccolli made such an impact , woiuld i be reading such drivel?

It seems once you are English or Brazilian, you are no good but an average Italian or some other nation as long as you play in SerieA and not Brazilian , you are world class

I have read some praise Maresca to the hilt and he has done very little in terms of big match games.

Rooney is not an out an out goal scorer but he is a special talent and I do not care where he is from he is good.

I have read Dp being slated for playing shite in big matches but shining in the league against so called small teams but now Rooney is slated for not shining in small matches but shining in the big ones, you cannot have it both ways

The guy is only 18 and has a wonderful career ahead of him, if he is allowed to play his football

Oliveira makes one or 2 runs in 60 mins for Juve, then he is absolute class

Camo provides 1 decent cross in 90 mins and he is excellent and in great form but somehow Rooney has to score 50 in a season before he is praised

Whether you like it or not, players like Adriano, Ronaldinho, Rooney, Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, Campbell are on top of their game and in their respective fields are better than most so give them their due

Well said, and: "a hattrick on his debut for a big club like Man united in the biggest club competion in the world" <--- don't forget he hasn't played a competitive match for nearly 4 months at the time and only started doing training with the ball half a week before the game against fenerbahce!

I mean, Cruyff is known for having an own opinion, he isn't reading english hype papers day in day out (his english is crap ffs! these are quotes translated from dutch), but as I said, he lit up in the studio when Rooney's game was on against fenerbahce whereas he has been gloomy all day long. He was like a kid, so happy and praising him bigtime. I always see him tone it down when there's too much praise on a youngster or any player.... when a pundit says something positive, he always dismisses it with a "yes, but..." and focuses on negatives of that player's performance or that team's performance etc... even if Holland win big or a much praised youngster did enormously well in most ppl's eyes he would be like that and remain down to earth... but with rooney he lit up and I was surprised how he praised him so much... he's definitely seen something special in HIS opinion, he's not been taken in by hype.

Saying Rooney is one of the best young talents in the world is one thing, saying he's better than Henry and Robby Baggio is another. The latter is just plain ignorant IMO. That BS is what you call hype.

Eriksson said he found him to be better when comparing them at the same age, not that he IS better (like so many of you love to put it to fit into your hype/bash rooney theory) than Baggio nor that he necessarily WILL be better than Baggio. Eriksson, a manager who has managed both during a young age, is in a better position to make that judgement than you biased lot are able to.
Cruyff didn't say Rooney is better than Henry, he says he will become better in his opinion, after looking at his potential and abilities. For a young boy who has already starred in a big tournament and contineously delivered in the BIG games he's played in so far, it's not that far stretched. Henry himself said live on french tv (interview right after the match): "Rooney... what a player. What a player". The list of experienced managers, past legends (not only from england), top footballers now (not only english) who rate him highly goes on and on. They all are taken in by the hype of course... see that way you all are right and these 'facts' fit as a glove onto your hype theories

Thats a load of horse shit too. Of course the coach of a young talent is gonna say things like "he's better than Baggio" to give the young lad confidence. He's a great young player, but he shouldn't recieve the titles he's brandished over and over again.

Now of course Eriksson could be dumb and made this mistake but he could also have really meant it. I am not going to say I can read his mind and therefore will not make assumptions. You obviously have already drawn your conclusion (which suits your opinions and theories... why doesn't that surprise me at all?) and can look forward to a great career in mindreading as a part time job on school festivals.

Cruijff walked off the pitch during an Ajax match, to demand that van Basten be given a debut. He gave Bergkamp his debut, and Pep Guardiola too if I remember correctly. He's managed Ajax and Barcelona, quite successfully too.

What have you done that you can criticise his opinion of a player?

for real, mutu had one good season at 23, he was god, even though he sucked at inter while older than rooney is now. yet rooney, who scored FOUR goals in euros while being 18, scored hat trick on his debut in the champions league after 3-month injury lay off is overrated? all football experts who can watch matches more often than you do, go to matches more often than you do, played football at a bit higher lever than us college 3rd league know nothing because rooney is overrated?

I didn't say Rooney is overrated; maybe if you'd learn to interpret posts before speaking your mind, that might help you out a bit.

I said Rooney does not deserve to be compared to Henry and Baggio yet. I also said Rooney does not have the style and flair that those two respective players have.

Hate towards English connection? Well, you know my feelings on the EPL and top English players, no need to go there again.

who is comparing them? from what i've read, he is tipped to be equal or even better than them. ffs, now you people are saying rooney is nowhere near henry, though you bash henry saying he's crap and couldnt survive a single in serie a. anyway, george best said rooney can be among the best, eriksson said rooney right now is better than baggio at that age. cant argue, he saw them, most of you didnt. cruijff said rooney can overcome henry in the future because his talent is phenomenal for this age. and ehats wrong with that, its not that rooney isnt proving them all wrong.

Have said it over and over. Rooney may actually be good, but there is no doubt that hes hyped out of proportion as well. He has a long way to go. Look at Ronaldinho. He'll take Rooney to school everyday of the week and twice on sunday, but i dont see him making the headlines of papers all over the world or being touted as the best thing in football by people like Eriksson. Why? Because hes not a freckled young englishman. Ronnie makes it to the list of the FIFA player of the year, gets his little coverage and thats that. As for Rooney - its one thing to be acknowledged as a rising young talent (absolutely fair to say that), but its completely another to be mentioned in the same breath as the world's greatest players like pele, baggio and even henry. Someone here mentioned it was only said in context to age, but the implications still carry a more generic meaning in the broader sense. So to me,its simply a ridiculous thing to say, whether your Erikkson, Cryuff or an amateur soccernet journalist.

As for what ive done to criticise Cryuff's opinion? Ive watched rooney, ronaldo and henry play.
