that's partly because it's very rare an 18 year old gets to play at a tournament as a regular, even less so for a famous footballing country, and even less as a striker.

as you can see, pele and rooney both fit into that category.but to say lil wayne comes even close is bullshit .
comes close to Pele,No!
actually i'm no fan of Rooney's,but ppl here say things like rooney is too overrated i have to respond to that.

Look at this rubbish:

Anglo Angle/Channel 4

Rooney better than Baggio?
Wayne Rooney is better than Roberto Baggio, according to England manager Sven Goran Eriksson. "He is a phenomenon of the modern game. He doesn't have any weaknesses as far as I can see," said the ex-Lazio boss. "The only other player I've had who I can compare him to is Baggio. But in fact he's more complete than Baggio because he's stronger."

Please

Hold on Andy. Its coming from the highly celebrated English coach from Sweden. And he makes so much sense of it. After all he's been there done that on a national level. The only thing that's more shocking than his statement is, how on earth he failed to win Euro 2004. I mean, he had Wayne Rooney on his team.

Rooney got injured ;)

I definetly think you can compare Rooney to Baggio. To be honest I can't understand why you can't see it. Rooney has acheived more than Baggio had at the same age and it is much harder for young talents to acheive anything today when fast results are priorited rather than long'term thinking. Rooney has been playing in Premier League for two years and played really good. He has a given starter in one of the best national teams in the world, He was perhaps the best player in the euro at the age of 19 none of this had Baggio acheived at that age. He plays for one of the best club teams in the world and has already scored a hattrick in the Champions league.
Baggio got his breakthrough when he was like 20 Rooney is not even there yet. Now sure there is nothing that say the Rooney is going to develop more than he has to this date, some people develop early some later. But to me Rooney is better than Baggio was at the same age and that is what is Erikssson is trying to say not wether Rooney is going to become better than Baggio ever was. That is something we can discuss later on when Rooney has had the chance to prove how good he actually is.

Have you ever watched Baggio play?! Rooney doesn't have even an ounce of Baggio's grace. You can tell by watching the two perform their trade on the pitch, not listening to hyped up Englishman.

Well Rooney got injured against Portugal in the quarterfinal defeat - he was fit and available before that - England dint look the part of Euro champs then either. ;), And you're forgetting Sven Goran Eriksson had Scholes, Beckham, Owen and co. who by the way he's previously compared to the likes of Figo and Zidane. What i cant understand is, if the players are as good as Eriksson claims they are, im surprised they just cant seem to make it past the quarter finals almost every tournament. Or wait, are Eriksson's tactics to blame for that?

PS: Saying Rooney achieved more than Baggio did at the same age, is the most hypocritical statement a man like Eriksson can put forth. Are you trying to say when Rooney is 36, Eriksson would compare the two again and say, oh Baggio was so much better than Rooney is at 36. Players are usually compared at their peak, after they have achieved something. If we go on the basis of age, there would be comparisons like Zalayeta being better than Henry on the virtue of having achieved more playing time at Juve than Henry did at the same age.

i wouldnt go as far as saying Rooney is better than Baggio, but he is one of the best youngsters in the world if not the best.and at 18 he did achieve more than Baggio, but thats no way to compare them IMO.

Rooney most play 20 more years before anyone should compare him to the legend Baggio!, but he has potential to be the best english, and maybe one of the worlds best.

You just cant compare fairly two players in such different ages, circumstances and way of playing....We still need to see if Rooney shows consistency...
Exactly,

One or two good seasons... or three goals in one game is no indication.

Rooney's style is deifferent from baggio. Rooney is more like paul scholes IMO. Baggio's got charisma and fantastic technique which makes up for his physical strength n posture.
Besides, from what I've seen, it doesnt matter what age u r in, people's skill level will mature at different age. But the curve isn't linear nor does it always increase. Just because Rooney's at this level doesn't mean he'll continuously improve. Take a look at Ronaldo, he played better when he was a teen! He lost his physical speed and also abit of his Skills IMO. Zidane and Nedved are much better than Ronaldo.
