idk about what he did at spezia but he essentially uses a three man backline in possession with Bologna, except he’s got one of his Fbs as a CB with Calafiori moving up into the midfield.

barbieri is another guy we should keep. Outside of Cambiaso we really don’t have any FBs for his system.
Both of his FBs normally stay back when one of the CB moves into midfield. So Danilo should work fine as FB in this system. Potentially also Djalo, he played 21 matches as RB or LB in 21/22.
So maybe we just need a LB to compete with Cambiasso. And Calafiori can also play as LB

totally forgot about Djalo, that could be an option.

What about attackers? He sets up two pure wingers or one is wing back?

Sell. Gatti. Please.
Gatti is a striker defender. Ramos style. He has an eye for goal. 4 goals this season. It's more goals than Milik and Kean.
Mottas style is for the CBs to take runs offensively moving out of position, with the fullbacks covering (Danilo) and so I can see how Gatti would work well in Mottas system tbh

Two pure wingers. He either plays a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3/4-1-4-1. in possession, if one of the CBs goes forward into midfield, it changes to a 3-2-4-1

…………….CF……………
LW…CM……CM….RW
………..CB….DM……….
…….LB…CB…RB………

But it seems like he generally gives his players a lot of freedom to create new formations when attacking, and adapt to their opponent’s formation to create numerical advantages in different areas.

So guys like Soule and Yildiz would probably be perfect for a guy like him. Probably could also use to much more bigger impact Cambiasos inclinations to play CM.

Huijsen also gets praised a lot for his skills on the ball, might become a nice surprise in a system like that.

Danilo might naturally be the first player you’d think about because we tried it in the past but honestly I consider his skills on the ball way to limited to effectively play at the midfield. Even as a RB I don’t consider him as a great player, he’s perfectly fine as a CB though especially in a defence of 3.

I think Huijsen is a perfect player for this style.

problem with huijsen is that he's still very weak in duels. bremer or even gatti win ~60% of their aerials, huijsen (195 tall guy) wins ~50%. ground duels even worse, ~40%.

his passing is very good though. would make a good dm lol

The kid is 18. He needs to grow muscle, but Mottas style is different the counterpress / high press will be different to what we're seeing under Allegri where there's more individual responsibility. A more "relational" approach could mean there's less of a need for always winning those aerials. I mean it's a trade off, right? Huijsen will give the team some other qualities. But I'm not thinking of Huijsen as a starter here. A rotational role would be exciting though

Is it the case with all our academy players look extremely weak in winning duels?
