Gourcuff looked really good for a year and a half at Bordeaux, though. That was a great team and he was the star. Second half of Blanc's second season it all started to fall apart though. And that had a lot to do with Gourcuff being out of form. Then Blanc left followed by Chamakh and Gourcuff and that was the end of that.
Lost all respect for and stopped following Gourcuff after he went to Lyon, but I gather that he's never recovered from that dip in form he had in Bordeaux

That goal was exactly what made me a huge fan back then. So magnificent, so reminicant of Zidane, the finish, of Platini.
But then first the dip, and then Lyon for fucks sake. He ruined his career. And i really think, he had such a massive potential...

Ben Arfa, Briand, Carasso. I think you could count Nasri as well. Guys like Malouda being regular starters in the French national team underlines the problem as a whole, I think.
Where are their youth academies now? How can they produce Henry, Trezeguet and Zidane from the same generation and almost nothing of that level since? Was it just a coincidence that they had such a stellar generation?

Its very strange indeed. Seems like none of the current generation has anything close to the neccecary maturity.
think about it, that generation had SO much leadership, pure talent and determination

and even then, looking at benzema, sure he's a good player, but not amongst the very best in his position
the golden generation, had trezeguet beeing the best poacher in the world, whilst henry was possibly one of the most complete forwards in the game at that point

Viera, Thuram (fuck them both), Petit, Desailly, Sagnol, Blanc, LIZARAZU! Djorkaeff I always thought was a boss (before I was a Juventino), and Makelele was the ultimate holding midfielder.
I don't even know who plays for France now and I'm going to have to look it up.... Wow, what an uninspiring list of names. Pogba, Ribery and Benzema. Hopefully they can build something around those three. No France in the World Cup will be very strange indeed, and I'd not like to see it again

Sadly for france, a lot of their other players have a tendency of being shit when they need them to perform. Yesterday Pogba was the best french player on the field in the midst of poor individual performances by his teammates. Ribery was horrible at worst, and uinspiring at best. Giroud was a ghost, remy was running around to somewhere, and the defence was intent on losing the match. Remarkable how poor they can be on the same day.

Before Zidane heroics at 98, their best efforts were around Platini´s time....and thats some good 10 or more years without being on the big stage.
But is sad to do not see pogba in the WC. It could be his ultimate test of superstardom.
Players like Pele i think were catapulted in WCs when performing at very young ages.
