Mellberg's a good player... I think he'll be a good signing.
Yes he is a good player, if your club is Aston Villa or any other "mid-table" club. The real question is, whether Mellberg is the answer to our prayers regarding a defender. And the answer is... NO!

I know he is free, which is better than nothing, but he isnt really the "superman" we seek, we need some more fuel, not another backup for our defense. We seem to ONLY have backups for our perfect defense, which we yet haven't established.

And Mellberg isn't exactly an improvement over Legro and Andrade, asuming the latter will ever find a place in our team again(the guy is damaged goods). Depthwise we are okay, we could use someone established who adds extra quality at the back though.

this free transfer attempt shows we have no money
Probably this shows not that we don't have money but that we don't have ENOUGH money to fill all the gaps in our team.

I'm not sure but i think it was Sacchi who said in the summer that if he was in Juve he would have tried to buy 3 world class players instead of getting 8 or 9 players.
What Sacchi said was probably an option our board thought of. Instead of paying ~50m EUR for, at the time considered average players or good but injury prone players, like Iaquinta, Almiron, Andrade, Criscito (and maybe the only star) Tiago, plus paying 10m EUR+taxes for their wages and aditional 7m EUR+taxes for the wages of Salihamidzic, Molinaro, Grygera, Nocerino (All this gives a total of ~75m EUR) we could have bought 3 world class players for these money but we would have had a very thin bench, eventhough our starting line-up would have been much better than it is today.
We decided not to risk anything in case of injuries of our starters, so we brought many new players in the team.

Now we don't need so many players but we still need at least 4 or 5 new players. I guess we have the same options : 5 "Almiron's" or 3 world class players+2 players on free ?
I believe our board will now change tactics and we'll get two cheap, but still solid and experienced players like Mellberg while the other 2 or 3 guys will be superstars.

I'm ok with getting Mellberg in Juve. I'm not thrilled because i think one of the superstars must be a central defender, but i'm not too disappointed if we buy the Swede.

he assures some cover like Kovac did but we had Canna/Thuram. For free I won't start a riot but I question the guy's positioning. If we can't compete to get Ivanovic and surely Carvalho then we'll have to settle with Olof. :shifty:

But he'd be rather like the Kovac we had, without Canna/Thuram. In other words, last season's poor Kovac..

so basically what we're trying to say is that we're f*cked.

If we can get 1-2m for Boum-Boum and replace him by Mellberg then there's no need to panic. If he's a starter...

Have you guys even watched Mellberg play for Villa? If you have you will know that he is just as good as Legro and better than Criscito and Boumsong. Plus he can fill in at right back if necessary. You guys are making it sound like he's some second rate defender.

I want Legro as Boum's replacement on the bench and a very good D to start next to Chiellini. I don't think Mellberg is that guy. Like I said, I don't like his positioning and would like to see him more dominant in the air.

Mellberg will be used as strength in depth and boumsong will exit with possible loan out for criscito who i've always said is still too early to bring back as hes still physically weak for our back line. whys people getting worried......mellberg on a free would only a improvement to our squad.

We are now in a much stronger position in terms of squad depth than in the summer. This means that it moves from buying quantity, to buying quality.

No harm in a couple of freebies though.
