Tuttosport - JUVENTUS, Engaged Mellberg

Seems that the 30 year-old Olof Mellberg, at the moment of Aston Villa, has won a place in Juventus, among the few defender, with also Ivanovic. Bianconero club would have still reached an agreement with the Swedish player, that will arrive in June for free.

Agreement will write only in February, but in meantime have to decide if will be of two or three years.

O'Neill furious as Juventus eye Olof Mellberg

Sven-Goran Eriksson has risked the wrath of Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill by advising Juventus to sign defender Olof Mellberg.

O'Neill has been trying to convince Mellberg to sign a new deal at Villa Park, with the 30-year-old out of contract in the summer and free to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign teams next month.

Mellberg, who joined Villa for £5 million from Racing Santander in July 2001, has been an ever-present in their back four and is rated one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

As such, O'Neill has been desperate to tie the Swede down to a new long-term deal, but his plans have not been helped by Eriksson's interventions.

He said: "Recommending Olof to another club is surprising. Maybe I should recommend some of his Manchester City players to Barcelona or Manchester United and see how he likes it.

"Olof has shown a fantastic attitude for us this season and of course I would like to keep all our best players.

"I was really surprised with what Sven has said because it's out of character for him to be speaking like that.

"I'm not sure he should be saying things like that about our player unless he is aiming to take him for his club."

Mellberg ‘agrees’ Juve switch
Thursday 6 December, 2007

Italian Press reports suggest that Juventus have agreed a deal with Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg.

It is no secret that the Bianconeri are keen to bring the Swedish international to Turin, but it seems that his arrival in June is now a formality.

Mellberg’s contract at Villa Park expires this summer, so he will be able to join Juve on a free transfer, but no official agreement can be announced until February.

After a superb start to the campaign, Claudio Ranieri’s men look likely to be competing in European competition next term and will need to bring in reinforcements.

The news will heap further misery on the out-of-favour Jean-Alain Boumsong. Rumours suggest that the French stopper will quit the club in the summer as he continues to slide down the pecking order.

As Mellberg’s arrival won’t leave Juve out of pocket, the deal isn’t likely to interfere with a possible move for Serbian defensive starlet Branislav Ivanovic.

The Lokomotiv Moscow man has already stated his desire to join the Cadetti champions and it is believed that negotiations are progressing quickly.

What is this? Why dont we sign Hakan Sukur aswell, while we are at it!
Mellberg's a good player... I think he'll be a good signing.

Thank God it's Tuttosport because if this were the case, Secco must be :spliff: as a kite.

I don't mind Mellberg for free, but only if he's accompanied by one other world class CB signing.
Actually. I rate Mellberg higher than Luisao, Da Costa and Lugano. Ivanovic, I haven't seen enough of, but he certainly does not have Mellberg's experience.

.. Not that I think Mellberg is a great defender.

So, can we rate this rumour as credible?
I think so. It doesn't look like Mellberg is going to extend his contract with Villa and O'Neill is pissed that Sven recommended him to us so there must be some truth in it.

I'm not sure what the general consensus is but I find Channel4 to be quite reliable.

Yea, maybe. After all, we are good at signing freebies and remember, least season in the same time of the year, we secured Grygera.

I consider Mellberg a better CB than Grygera anyways. Mellberg was pretty good for Swedish NT everytime I saw him playing. I don´t think he is top class defender though who can hold our defense on his own. I don´t know, maybe his signing would not be so bad as people make it out to be. He is very strong, dominant in air and a solid marker. He would make a solid alternative. But still, I wouldn´t be completely satisfied if we don´t secure another class defender (and this time I really mean a "class" one). Someone like Walter Samuel, Alex from Chelsea, etc.....

I wasnt against Mellberg's arrival in the first place. And i think that he'd do well too,but the question is : Is he coming as a first team regular or to add depth to the squad?I hope its the former and that we do end up signing Ivanovic as well. But ive got a bad feeling that we wont get Ivanovic.

Nah, I think we are just being modest. Or maybe Gsol´s theory should be applied here that we won´t buy any expensive stars until our team is sold to another owner. It makes sense.

Not so sure about that. Channel4 are usually only a fourth-hand source. They just translate from italian mercatorumour sites, who often take their rumours from newspapers(including tuttosport!).

So with channel4 the chances are you get a lost in translation version of a tuttosport rumour.

So, it looks like there is truth in this rumour. Do you guys think Mellberg might go for a starting spot, or will he be more of a sub? And would that mean that Chiellini might move back to the left next season?

Chiellini(Molinaro)-Andrade (Legro) - Mellberg (Criscito) - Ivanovic? (Zebina, Grygera)

?
