For free, I'm all for it. Like Sadomin said, he's an improvement over most of CBs we have now.
Most of them? Except Boumboum I can't think of anyone. Criscito might not be as reliable yet, but he's only 20. He's still learning everyday, and I prefer to play Domenico over an alter Schwede.

Honestly I think he's better than Boumsong, Legrotaglie and Criscito. The only one above him would be Chiellini and the injured Andrade. Criscito as things are now is a long way from his standard. You think too little of Mellberg, though he's not out of this world, he's a pretty solid defender with good leadership skills. Just what we lack in Boum, Legro and the young Criscito.

Though, I must say, Legro is being solid so far.

Possible.
But there's a big gap between Aston Villa and Juve. I mean he's 30 and never played for a bigger club than Villa and Santander. Not to mention Serie A defending.

Well he's a regular starter, captain, for his NT and has big international experience. That means a lot in my book and though he may not have Real or Juventus in his repertoair, come on, Boumsong, Legrotaglie and Criscito are even further from that standard. Had it not been for Calciopolli, most likely, all 3 of them wouldn't be here ATM.

Mellberg won't revolutionaise our defense but will add some quality to it. IMO, he's better than Kovac. We're still gonna have to buy a world class CB next season, but Mellberg on a free is a good deal.

Ljungberg is now captain over Mellberg, since the latter quit the NT after the WC, and then came back. But that's not really the point.
Agree with Boumsong, we knew how bad he was before he came...

Criscito and Legro didn't paly for european powerhouses, but they are both Italian and played in Italy. And Criscito is just 20.

So what's the point of bringing Mellberg, if we have to buy another defender anyway? If he comes on a free, it's in june, so he's not a temporary solution either.

And don't be fooled by "free" we'd still have to pay his EPL kind of wage, with a new CB, Chiellini, Andrade, Legro, Criscito, and possibly Boumsong, I don't see room for Mellberg, unless either Legro or Andrade leaves?

I can certainly see Boumsong leaving in the near future, especially considering that huge wage of his.

Geof, you can't compare Legro and Criscito's international experience with Mellberg's. Olof has 79 caps and has been a regular for Sweden since the 2002 World Cup. In his bag he's got solid games against the likes of Argentina, Italy and England.

Depth. He's gonna be free and I doubt his wage will be high, it can't be higher than Boumsong's. Chiellini is still primarily a left back, Boumsong will leave most likely, Andrade is always an injury risk and Legrotaglie can become a liability any day, not to mention Criscito who's still a gamble. Our CB situation is delicate and needs a lot of work, most of all it needs investments. If I had it my way, I'd sell both Boumsong and Legrotaglie, brought in Samuel and Mellberg for free.

We need CBs, that's the bottom line, all things considered I see Mellberg for free as a bargain. He's experienced, solid and has leadership skills, everything we lack in our current CB repertoair.

@ Alfio, no his best years are not behind him, Canna had his best years when he came to Juve, perhaps that will be the case with Mellberg as well.

Actually he didn't quit the NT he just handed over the captains armband because he wasn't motivated to wear it. Something that can be seen as evidence to my theory that Mellberg has a loser's mentality.

Still a solid CB and good enough to be backup at current Juve.

Olof Mellberg and Martin Laursen set for Aston Villa contract talks

Dec 4 2007

By Bill Howell, Birmingham Mail

MARTIN O'Neill insists he will be putting all his efforts this week into making crucial ground in talks aimed at keeping Olof Mellberg and Martin Laursen at the club.

The Villa boss has no midweek fixture to distract his attentions and says he aims to bring agents of both players to the club in a big effort to convince the players to sign new deals.

Both have just seven months remaining on their deals and can sign pre-contract agreements in just a few weeks time with foreign clubs.

That is a major worry for Villa, who do not want to see £10million of talent disappearing for nothing.

Mellberg has courted interested from Serie A with Juventus seen to be leading a clutch of clubs trying to entice him away.

Laursen has put behind him three years of injury problems to play in every one of Villa's 15 league games this season.

The Dane has swept away fears he could not play two games in a week by missing just 45 minutes, on the opening day against Liverpool, and the final six minutes at Middlesbrough.

Despite the obvious draw of playing in Italy, O'Neill today revealed he has no doubt Villa can convince Mellberg to stay.

"Can we get him to sign? Absolutely," he said. "I am trying to make an appointment now. We have got this free week and I will be trying to speak to their agents.

"I will either get them over or get them on the phone and we will see where we are.

"I am well aware that sitting and talking to somebody, and doing a deal, are two different things."

O'Neill is fulsome in his praise for Swedish international Mellberg, who has played all bar the first four games of the season at right back.

"Mellberg has a lot of confidence about him from that goal against Middlesbrough when he pulled the ball down, and he helped make the goal at Blackburn last week with a run for Ashley Young," said O'Neill.

"He is trying to get forward. I think his attitude has been fantastic, really, because he is still playing in an alien position."

I demand Secco's resignation immediately!!!
If it ain't true :xfinger: then I demand Tuttosport's Giancarlo Padovan's resignation for making me choke on a Pringle chip when I read this news.

Thank God it's Tuttosport because if this were the case, Secco must be :spliff: as a kite.

I don't mind Mellberg for free, but only if he's accompanied by one other world class CB signing.
