Chiellini is powerful in the air while Mellberg is very good on the ground. I think it would be a good pairing.
I suppose you are referring to his defending on the ground and not his ability with the ball at his feet. Because his passing game, as Sadomin pointed out, is downright horrendous. That goes for his long ball accuracy at least. So if he's coming to Juve, Ranieri needs to prohibit him from doing anything else than passing it short to his fellow CB.

GARDNER: WE NEED TO KEEP MELLBERG

"It is squad of quality players. The gaffer has got rid of all the dead wood and brought in fresh wood and hopefully he will add to that in January."

Sporting Life
 well that's putting it nicely. i know i would feel proud if an ex-team-mate of mine called me dead wood.

i really dont understand this transfer. Melberg is a good squad player at best and our defense is full of those.

If this goes through and all the defenders we have stay(except for boumsong), its either that our future partnership is going to be Andrade with either chiellini or Legro.

Yeah, just what we need. More inane long balls blasted wrecklessly up field.

i thought we are going to get him already in the winter break, but now it seems in the summer. So his actually going to be our summer defensive signing?
:wallbang:

In that case i hope we get the likes of Ivanovic in the winter.

Yeah, I meant his defending on the ground.

Olof has a lot to consider - O'Neill
Mon 10 Dec, 10:30 AM

Martin O'Neill is refusing to give up hope of persuading long-serving defender Olof Mellberg to stay at Aston Villa and sign a new contract.Mellberg, whose current deal runs out next summer, is reported in the Italian media to be ready to sign a pre-contract with Juventus.

But the 30-year-old Sweden international has not told Villa boss O'Neill that he is close to ending his seven-year association with the Midlands club.

He said: "I don't know if there is anything in the Juventus link and Olof will tell me in his own time if that is the case. Players are free to make decisions here.

"This is an important contract for Olof. He has been here seven years and, in term of the commitment he has given since I've been here, I couldn't ask any more.

"He has played out of position for most of this season at right-back and just got on with it. He might think a lot of things. He might think that seven years is a long time at one club in this day and age.

"But I will still think, if we can come up with something which is reasonably suitable, that he might stay at Villa. But if he chooses to go, all he has to do is just let me know.

"We have been to-ing and fro-ing and I can understand this is an important decision for him. You have to look at a few things and it is likewise for players."

He certainly doesn't sound too confident of keeping him at Villa.

Aston Villa Tech O'Neill 'I do not know if Mellberg will go to Juve'

16:34, December 10

The technician dell'Aston Villa, Martin O'Neill, despite rumors that the damage done to the transfer of defender Mellberg to Juventus, continues to hope that the players renewals with the English club. I do not know if there is something in the real voices that want to Juve but the player has full freedom to decide its future. "

If we get this guy I can't see us signing a world class CB.

Our management would want to keep Andrade and Legro could start alongside him with Mellberg and Crisito as cover.

Mellberg admits Juve move talk
2007-12-12 13:01:00
Official Euro 2008 Gear

Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg has done little to quell rumours linking him with a move to Juventus by admitting a transfer is possible.

The Sweden international, who has been at Villa Park for seven years, is out of contract at the end of the season and would be free to open talks with interested parties in January.

Italian media reports claim that Mellberg will sign a pre-contract agreement with the Serie A side once the transfer window opens.

And the centre-back has failed to reject speculation about a possible move to Turin, telling the Daily Mirror: "Juventus, I cannot deny it."

Villa boss Martin O'Neill also faces a fight to keep hold of trio Martin Laursen, Thomas Sorensen and Wilfred Bouma, who are all out of contract in six months time.

THE MELLBERG FILES
We've known for a while now that Juventus are reportedly trailing big bearded Olof Mellberg, but The Sun claims today that knowing he's big and bearded is just not enough for Claudio Ranieri.

They reckon the Italian has been watching the Swede from afar for most of the season, in an effort to ensure Mellberg 'would fit into the Turin set-up'.

Mellberg's contract is up in the summer, and would move to Italy on a free if he so desires.

from todays SUN
"CLAUDIO RANIERI has compiled a staggering dossier on Aston Villa’s Olof Mellberg.

Italian giants Juventus have watched the defender in every single game he has played for club and country this season.

The Sweden star is set to sign a pre-contract agreement with Ranieri’s Juve in January and can leave Villa Park on a Bosman next summer.

But ex-Chelsea chief Ranieri wanted to make absolutely sure Mellberg, 30, would fit into the Turin set-up.
Out of position

There has been a representative from Juventus at all 19 of Mellberg’s matches and the reports have compared him with famous old-boy Paolo Montero.

Mellberg has played out of position at right-back this season because Villa are short in that area.

And his commitment means that boss Martin O’Neill will not hesitate to keep picking him even if he does agree to join Juventus. ........"

I was all happy to see him in coming in a cheap transfer this winter,
but i m not too happy for getting him for free next year, because i think we need to make space, sell two back up CBs and buy a proper one.
Even if we sell Boum Boum, still, Legro,Criscito,Mellberg and potentially Zebina,Chiellini and Grygera may be Andrade's partner in the center of our defense,
there would be no need (apparent) to bring a very good (and expensive CB)
I feel our management do not wish to invest any serious money for our enhancement and will just bet everything to our teamwork and fighting/winning spirit...

I think the Swedish national set up has some of the most underrated players in Europe. Needless to say the national team captain is just one of them. I'm all for Mellberg coming to Juve. He will fit in like a Zlatan.
