An official Congratulations to Fabio Cannavaro!:pint:

He very well deserved this award. He was an exemplary leader for the Azzurri throughout the World Cup and he also played very well for Juve and helped them win two scudetti. I am very happy for him and very proud. He is a great example and a role model for the children of Napoli. I also liked very much what he said in his acceptance speech, never forgetting Juve:

http://www.eurosport.com/football/ballon-d-or/2006/sport_sto1019039.shtml

"Of course I will bring this trophy back to Madrid but I would also love to bring it to Turin," Cannavaro, who joined Real Madrid from Juventus in July, told a news conference.

Cannavaro said the collective performances of Juventus and Italy had played a key role in his success.

"It is thanks to them that I have been able to show my qualities on the pitch. So I want to thank my Juve team mates and all my colleagues from the Nazionale," he said.

Cannavaro, the sixth Real Madrid player to win the award, also had thoughts for Naples, the city were he was born and raised.

"I would like to show the trophy to Naples as it is a very special city, where I grew up. I used to play football in the streets of Naples," he said.

"I would love to show it to the kids who are in difficulty over there."

Wow by Houllier's own standard of logic we should look at what Majithsen did to Henry. I am sure Canna is far better defender than Majithsen "I had Henry in my pocket". Houllier is up there being one of the most imbelcillic manager in the world. I am still surprised how he didnt f*ck up with Lyon.

Speaking of Henry's credentials - Oh didnt I mentioned that Arsenal was one "food poisoning away from not qualifying CL?". I think Henry deserved one of Dinho's awards but not this one.

Houllier slams Golden Canna Monday 27 November, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lyon Coach Gerard Houllier has hit out at the decision to award the 2006 Golden Ball to Fabio Cannavaro. “It’s a scandal,” he declared.

The official announcement of the world champion’s victory will take place this evening in Paris.

The defender will become the fourth Italian player to win the prestigious trophy, following Gianni Rivera in 1969, Paolo Rossi in 1982 and Roberto Baggio in 1993.

“Compared to other players he certainly didn’t deserve to win,” claimed Houllier.

“He played a great World Cup, but not a great season. Personally I would have given it to Gianluigi Buffon,” added the tactician, whose side held Real Madrid to a 2-2 draw in their latest Champions League Group E tie.

“It’s a scandal and the thing that bothers me most is that Thierry Henry, a player who has been scoring 20 goals a season for years now and appeared in two finals in the last season, was not even taken into consideration, there was a negative campaign around him.”

“As to Cannavaro, you only need to look at what John Carew managed to do against him in the Champions League – watching that game you understand that Cannavaro’s win is an abominable result,” concluded Houllier

He is smart man

This is very nice of Fabio :touched:

I hoped for Buffon, but one can't help but acknowledge that Cannavaro deserved it in the end

France Football has the chance to send the message that FIFA didn't when awarding the Player of the Tournament at the world cup. FIFA had a choice to award their prize to Zidane or Canna. Choosing Canna would have been a victory for REAL football, not Real Madrid & their "Galactico's" philosophy, that having great players who sell shirts is more important than who wins. FIFA, as usual made a balls of it, & gave the damn thing to Zidane, who will be remembered for a brutal final act, a great footballer, who threw it all away because he couldn't take a few playground insults.

The same decision is now faced by France Football. Both Gigi & Canna had great seasons, proving to be the best in the world in their respective positions. Italy could not have won the WC without either, both proved vital at different times. Juve would not have lifted lo scudetto without both in unison. Gigi returned to his best for the crucial run in, Canna probably our most consistant player all season. The two are inseperable on the field, therefore (and here is my original point) it is down to the morals of both men. Gigi stayed when leaving was the easy option, showed honesty, loyalty, respect & devotion. Canna simply took the money & ran.

Over to you France Football, Do The Right Thing.............
:disagree: Guess France Football has no balls either then?

The new critera for player of the year/tournament is now obviously;
1. Who was the most publicly visible Real Madrid player this season
2. If in doubt see rule one.

Sorry for being so bitter, congrats to Cannavaro, he DOES deserve it, just Gigi deserved it more

He was a tower in defence for two seasons at Juventus and for the Azzurri during the summer. A rather small one, but a tower nonetheless. Deep down inside I felt that he probably deserved it just a wee bit more than Buffon, so I'm ok with this. And it's really cool that he didn't forget about us. Amazing player. Hopefully we'll get to see some nice pictures of Cannavaro back in Torino with the golden ball.

I zapped from one Italian TV station to the other but I couldn`t find ...,

- a one hour long feature during a crucial scudetto run-in including an "exclusive" video of a player at Parma with a needle stuck to his arm......
- long debates after that accusing a player of doping and his current club.... but not the club he was with at that time.... (and ignoring the club he played in between those periods)
- a person previosuly investigated for a financial scandal and given temporary power to dictate matters at the Italian FA calling for a player to make a public apology simply because he gave his own opinion about his former team official of the team he had won honours with...
- the FIGC president doing the same..
- the "fans" chanting slogans of "non sei il mio capitano" and "vattene"...
- interviews calling for the national team captain to be stripped of his role...

All I found was that all TV stations and programs were glorifying a player from Naples (who said that he comes from a city with problems just weeks after all the authorities said otherwise)
who had won a golden ball reportedly for being the most recognisable SYMBOL of the National team .... and for his achievments DURING the WHOLE year !!!

HYPOCRITES !!!
:agree: You said it! I was thinking the same thing a couple of weeks ago when these rumours started. Where was his "drug" scandal that happened to emerge while he was with Juventus? Conveniently, that was "found" right after he left Internazionale. Bullshit.

I been reading in some pages about the winner of of the Golden Ball. Short history: some think that is "unfair" that a defenser won this trophy who "must" for "magic" players, example: Henry, Ronaldinho, etc.
In otherhand, for example Gigi Riva, said "it's fair that a defender won the golden ball" but "Buffon deserverd more".
It's hard to think that defenders as Scirea, Gentile, Baresi or Maldini (who never got at least the bronce), Krol, didn't get it. If im not wrong the last defender who won this prize was Sammer on '96.

I'm so pissed watching those Real Madrid suits saying on TV that how honoured they feel to have another madrid player getting the award.

Wake up! Canna getting the award has nothing to do with madrid! It's his performance in WC and Juve last season that earned him the award.

These spanish bastards are just shameless!

Biased opinion...Cannavaro had a wonderful season at Juve + a great WC.

I agree, Henry had an excellent season also, but I´m not so sure he deserved it over Cannavaro.
I would if I could, but I enjoy the fun of it. You see I have seen him play many many times, and have watched him over the years, cheered him on and off the pitch, which gives me justification to have and keep my opinion, and if you like to have peace that is fine, I however like to have intelligent dialogue, with humour to boot (something that too few DP worshipers have).

On the matter of Canna, I just can not see how he won it. If it was on the performance of the World Cup alone, he would not win it, to my mind, as he was not the best player in the Italian side, never-mind the tournament. If it was over the season, he would not win it as he was not the best player in the Juventus side, never-mind the world: I still recall, with alarm, the Match against Arsenal when he was torn to shreds.

As much as I admire him as a player, he had better seasons in the Bianconero than the last one.

Buffon, if based on the entire season for country and club:
Zidane if based on the World Cup, where he showed the world just what can be done with feet (not to mention the head!).

@Bianconero, I´m not quite sure regarding you and Del Piero.

Do you love him or not?

And what´s your true opinion on him?

You can do whatever you want, but making jokes about Del Piero will just give you more and more enemies, trust me.

@Question for all of you:

Would you say that Buffon deserved it more if Cannavaro stayed in Juventus?
