In the last 8 years in CL, 5 Italian teams played in the CL final, and 3 teams won it all. Ac Milan in 2003 & 2007, and Inter in 2010. In the same period, only one German team made it to the final, Bayern in 2010 and they lost ironically to an Italian team. The reason why the German got the 4th spot, because their teams usually excel in Europa league competition, which the Italian teams don’t care about; they probably do rather win the Italian cup than Europa league. It just unfair to treat both CL and Europa league the same when awarding coefficient points. This totally doesn’t make sense, since CL is more prestige.

The real difference is that Bundesliga teams do well in the EL - whereas Italian teams do better in the UCL
Yes, that's the main difference. If you count the coefficient points Italians and Germans got in CL, then you will see this:

2006/2007 - Italy 14.125 --- Germany 11.000
2007/2008 - Italy 13.375 --- Germany 9.000
2008/2009 - Italy 12.500 --- Germany 10.000
2009/2010 - Italy 19.500 --- Germany 17.833
2010/2011 - Italy 12.000 --- Germany 16.333

Total: Italy 71.500 --- Germany 64.166

I'm counting the last 5 seasons because UEFA does the same and only the last 5 count for the final coefficient points.
------
With the exception of this current season, where things can still change (even though it's more likely to change in Germany's favor), the Italian teams in CL are better than their German counterparts in every season. But the difference in EL is huge and that gives the Germans an edge, a big one.

Right now Germany has 8.122 points more in the coefficient standings and that's quite a big difference (roughly said, around 25 match wins) which will most probably only grow bigger till the end of the season. Since points from season 2006/07 won't count next year, then the current 8.122 pts difference will grow to 10.550 pts difference.

As said many times, by me especially, in seasons 2012/2013, 2013/2014 and 2014/2015, Germany will surely have 4 teams in CL while Italy will have 3. Now, the same trend could go on and on unless the Italian teams start doing better in Europe starting from next year.

So much for the Italian mindset that "meaningless" competitions like Coppa and EL don't mean a thing. If they took every competition seriously we wouldn't be in this mess.

So as of right now...

Italy get 4 teams in the CL and Germany get 3 teams in the CL.

In the EL does Italy get 3 teams and Germany 4? (I realize that Italian teams could also play in the EL in the same year they play in the CL, I'm just speaking generally)

the thing is that the coefficient should be separated (el and ucl) imo
That's very tough to do due to many reasons, which will take too much time explaining, but lets have some fun and see how would have the CL coefficient looked, ignoring the results in EL for the last 5 years

01. England 107.250
02. Spain 78.500
03. Italy 71.500
-------
04. Germany 64.166
05. France 61.332
06. Portugal 50.999
-------
07. Denmark 47.000
08. Ukraine 43.750
09. Greece 37.250
10. Russia 33.416
11. Turkey 32.000
12. Scotland 29.750
13. Romania 29.750
------
14. Holland 29.250
15. Cyprus 26.750
16. Switzerland 25.000
17... etc

The first three (England, Spain, Italy) would have had 4 teams in CL, the following 3 (Germany, France, Portugal) would have had 3 teams in CL, the following 7 would have given 2 teams in CL and all the rest would've had only 1 team in CL (qualifiers).

Btw, England's dominance in CL is huge.
