Chinese govt decided they want to become the shit in world of football in upcoming decade. Investing heavily into the sport (youth program started with tons of spanish youth academy coaches) and their league with giving these clubs and bussinessmen state funding almost. Plus these players, the salaries they get? Tax free...

Football is very popular in China, no? Probably some wealthy Chinese individuals/ companies trying to tap into a huge market of football fans at home who only watch better foreign leagues. Figured they could finally get in on some of that action if they bring attractive players to them

From the perspective of the players heading there it's simply more greed. it's not like any of them have dreamed of playing in China their whole lives

Its Goverment initiative Kyle (the President aka Party leader jump started all this...), alot of the money is from the state, besides giving carte blanche and free reign to their billionaires to starting investing into the sport. Which will be easy decision for a growing sport in a 1.3bn nation that is the 2nd largest economy on the planet (population and economy means they wont even need to market themselves to the world, will make huge bank domestically in tv deals etc). Basically they get serious, rest outside the top european leagues are left to the dust(financially, developing their weak local talent will take LONG time and lots of work)...

Unlike the Russians in their decaying league or the Arab oil billionaires in The Gulf, their aim isnt just to throw money at mercenaries that will be there short term for their retirement. They seriously want to upgrade every aspect from ground up for coming decade. Last time they made a committed effort to improve in a sports was before 2008 Olympics, they spent a near decade of preparing and developing talent in random sports no one gave a fvck about in China, and farmed out a tons of gold medals out of it. Ofcourse Football as the most accessible and competetive sport on the planet is not even a fraction as easy as it iss preparing future champions for random swimming or archery disciplines that only few thousand compete in world wide, but that kind of serious dedication will bear fruit and decent growth down the line eventually.

They also have an agreement with Portuguese 2nd division (for Chinese players and coaches to play and develop there) and are working with Jorge Mendes.

When China does things, they do it right, and this won't be an exception. China will have the 6th or 5th best league in the world in the future.

And regarding why the players would move there:

Why China and not more competitive footie? Why not? He isn't good enough to play for a top club and win trophies in Europe, and he'll get called by his NT irrespective of where he plays his club footie. Might as well make the big bucks in China.
True for every player who moved there so far. Alex Teixeira moving there would be the only odd one. That'd be pure greed and nothing else.

According to British media, Shakhtar wanted 57m pounds (75m euro) from Liverpool. Whether that's true or not, I doubt Shakhtar will settle for 50m when Jackson Martinez went for 42/45m.

Nah in some video interview Rakib posted of Teixeira, the player himself says Shaktar rejected a 32m bid. That was just last week I recall.

I wonder what are the sources of income for a chinese football club. They should have no problem getting high viewership just locally and filling football stadiums with fans since its a small planet overthere. Also shirt sponsors should make some money but not shirt sales since knockoffs will be everywhere. I'd like to research this sometime

Apparently government and big business in China are pushing the forays into the football market. The TV deal just signed this year was for 1.25 Billion over the next 5 years, 250 mil/year on average, which dwarfs the 9 mil it was in 2015. I mean, that's quite the influx of capital right there, not to mention the money wealthy owners are tossing into it without any rules/regulations.

India is trying to tap into the market as well, no?
Nowhere near that level. Not even close.

Indian Super League is just a 3 month tournament where retired/semi-retired footballers can make some good money in a short space of time. Its still in its infancy and remains to be seen if they will collaborate this tournament into the regular club season. If they do that, then i doubt big names will agree to play in India.

Unlike the MLS, I could see the Chinese League actually becoming somewhat important in the future. It remains to be seen whether they can produce some WC players of their own too, one would think that with the right facilities and rising popularity of the sport, China could easily become a contender for the WC by virtue of pure population size too.

Alex Texeira to Jiangsu Suning for 50m euros
