If I may step in here, as I know well the House of Savoy - ahh, the cradle of kings centered in Torino where a man once sat a little boy on his knee and said, "boy, whatever happens, you must never tell anybody about what we did here today. Otherwise, I'll have to kill you, amico mio."

And I am proud to say that man was Tifoso Lou . . . and that little boy was me.

But during a ski clinic in savoy switzerland, the instructor told one of his pupils to go out to america and conquer the insurmoutable slopes found in the midnight taquerias.

I'm familiar with the story but it works if the frog isn't smart enough to know whats going on. Now when you apply this theory to a country you assume its people don't understand what's is occuring. In the case of the US, there are many people who know what is going on as demonstrated by Greg's introduction of the boiling frog. I think many people are underestimating the American people.

As for your question of a threshold and what it is. Right now no major rights or liberties have been taken away that effect the major population, but suppose a a curfew were imposed or even better, a military draft were instated. That would be crossing the line, even most conservatives would be outraged, which is what happened in the 1960s and 70s.
I hope you're right about that. Meanwhile people's rights have been eroding in many small ways, a lot of damage has already been done.

As for your references to Nazi's and Hitler, that's soooooooo 2002. Besides Bush hardly has the ability to utter a sentence without a studder let alone whip a country into a nationalist frenzy.
Well, maybe Hitler isn't the best comparison, it's the first thing that came to mind.

So he's a commie too? That bastard!

I posted this in spanish earlier but here's another famous venezuelan:

"And you, Americans, who have been separated from the road of justice by error and perfidy, know that your brothers forgive you and seriously regret your misdeeds, intimately persuaded that you cannot be guilty, and that only the ignorance and blindness imposed on you by the authors of your crimes could cause you to perpetrate them."

No the boiling frog isn't about intelligence at all. It's about phasing. Everybody knows what's going on and had you explained it to somebody before the turn of the century, saying "Here is a list of the freedoms the government will take away soon", they would've been outraged. But it's been phased in. And every phase has been backed up with arguments. Every phase has seen discussions, nation-wide debates and were usually initially received with scepticism.

But here we are. The police are allowed to hold us in captivity for a virtually unlimited amount of time so long as they stamp "potential terrorist" on our foreheads, we can't travel without having our underwear turned inside out and our personal details wired in to the government of the nation we're headed for and if the security services, just for funsies, feel they need some information on you, they can get it in the blink of an eye.

Intelligence has nothing to do with it. Marketing plans and phasing are the key words.

You win. I don't know enough to counter your argument, so I won't make a fool of myself trying to.

I've never traveled internationally but I've never experienced an trouble flying in the US. And I even got caught with a knife once.

I don't know about winning... It's just that I study political science so I have my fair share of discussions on this subject...

That is a shame, but I don't really know what use anything besides the first information group would be. It seems excessive waste to demand all that information.

Be happy you're not flying to Isreal.
See, this is the thing we talked about. 5 years ago privacy was considered a major important issue. Now it's become "acceptable" for certain companies to obtain this information in "special circumstances".

then what do you call the referendum for savoy and the ceding of nice?
Entirely different than what I was getting at...I was simply stating that although Sicily has been taken over by various civilizations over the years and there is clear signs (common words in Moroccan and Italian...the physical features of some Sicilians) it has always remained a part of Itay and the people of Sicily are not so far off from being Italians (unlike some African and Middle Eastern nations were different tribes/religions were forced to co-exist).

I never said it was ok to obtain the information. I just checked to see if Isreal did the same thing and found out they do.
