To be among the 5 richest you need to be very intelligent. You just don't get there without earning it to some degree. But the vast majority of the extremely wealthy are nothing like those people.
You need to specialize in what you do and be a cold motherfucker. Oh, and then you need luck and probably a "favorable" start to your life. Your two last lines are true. Didn't they write about this last year? It's funny how especially Americans ignore this fact.

As you might expect, not all of the billionaires are self-made. Many, such as Walton family members, inherited their wealth. Others, such as famous right-wing activists Charles and David Koch, inherited great wealth and then increased that wealth significantly. Almost 1,200 on the overall list are self-made, with about 230 having inherited their wealth. (Some 400 are like the Kochs.)

so thats about 70% self made @Seven

So how many of those started off with a poor or even average family? I'm guessing that everything under 10m is not seen as wealth..

A simple spelling mistake has led to a 10-year-old Muslim boy being interviewed by British police over suspected links to terrorism.

The boy, who lives in Accrington in Lancashire, wrote in his primary school English class that he lived in a “terrorist house”. He meant to write “terraced house”.
'You worry they could take your kids': is the Prevent strategy demonising Muslim schoolchildren?

His teachers did not realise it was a spelling error and instead reported the boy to the police, in accordance with the 2015 Counter-Terrorism and Security Act, which states that teachers are obliged to alert the authorities to any suspected terrorist behaviour.

As a result, the child was interviewed on 7 December by police and the authorities examined a laptop found at his family home.

Of course you need luck. One of my good friends became millionaire buying houses on foreclosure. On his 100 first buys, he only lost money on 4 houses. As he said:
"I worked hard, but got lucky that I only lost money on 4 houses - it's kinda unheard of".
:agree:

Luck, money and hard work is the story behind most succesful entrepreneurs.

And of course cashing in on their employees hard work.

Good luck can only get you so far, and bad luck does not keep anyone from achieving success (and wealth). You can fail once, twice, three times and so on, and still be successful in the end. Those who give up have only themselves to blame.

But anyway, almost nobody takes risks so they'd rather be fed by those who do. It's only normal to think you can't succeed on your own if you never have the balls to actually try it but people play it safe instead.

He wrongly attributed a skill he possesses/developed to luck. You can't get lucky 96 times out of 100, especially if you're selling houses.
