Of course you need luck. One of my good friends became millionaire buying houses on foreclosure. On his 100 first buys, he only lost money on 4 houses. As he said:
"I worked hard, but got lucky that I only lost money on 4 houses - it's kinda unheard of".
Good luck can only get you so far, and bad luck does not keep anyone from achieving success (and wealth). You can fail once, twice, three times and so on, and still be successful in the end. Those who give up have only themselves to blame.
But anyway, almost nobody takes risks so they'd rather be fed by those who do. It's only normal to think you can't succeed on your own if you never have the balls to actually try it but people play it safe instead.

He wrongly attributed a skill he possesses/developed to luck. You can't get lucky 96 times out of 100, especially if you're selling houses.
