To be among the 5 richest you need to be very intelligent. You just don't get there without earning it to some degree. But the vast majority of the extremely wealthy are nothing like those people.

You need to specialize in what you do and be a cold motherfucker. Oh, and then you need luck and probably a "favorable" start to your life. Your two last lines are true. Didn't they write about this last year? It's funny how especially Americans ignore this fact.

So how many of those started off with a poor or even average family? I'm guessing that everything under 10m is not seen as wealth..

Of course you need luck. One of my good friends became millionaire buying houses on foreclosure. On his 100 first buys, he only lost money on 4 houses. As he said:

Good luck can only get you so far, and bad luck does not keep anyone from achieving success (and wealth). You can fail once, twice, three times and so on, and still be successful in the end. Those who give up have only themselves to blame.

But anyway, almost nobody takes risks so they'd rather be fed by those who do. It's only normal to think you can't succeed on your own if you never have the balls to actually try it but people play it safe instead.

He wrongly attributed a skill he possesses/developed to luck. You can't get lucky 96 times out of 100, especially if you're selling houses.
