thought troy was amassive dissapointment but the performance of eric banna was superb, kingdom of heaven i expected more from but taht is because i rate ridley scott highly. overall i would say troy is probably better
i like troy a lot more than kingdom of heaven because i thought bloom didn't handle the role very well. But the overall portrayal of the story was done very well.

From Troy there is one line i won't forget when the guy with the beard who was in Brad Pitt's crew was speaking to him towards the end and he said " it was my life's honor serving for you my lord" i dont know why but the way he said it was so good.

i just watched 'tears of the sun' again last nite cuz it was on tv when i got home and i must say that flick is really good for some reason. i think the setting/scenery, the character development and the impeding denouement makes it greatness.

it is a sad movie though

British film director and writer Anthony Minghella has died aged 54.

Minghella's films included The English Patient - which earned him an Oscar for best director in 1997 - as well as Truly, Madly, Deeply and Cold Mountain.

He suffered a fatal haemorrhage in London days after having surgery for cancer of the tonsils and neck, his US agent Leslee Dart said.

Jude Law, who worked with Minghella on three films, said he was "deeply shocked and saddened" at the news.

The actor described him as "a brilliantly talented writer and director" and "a sweet, warm, bright and funny man". aw's co-star in The Talented Mr Ripley, Gwyneth Paltrow, said Minghella was "a wonderful man" who was "so interested in art and making the world better for art".

Actor Kevin Spacey praised the director as "one of the greats".

Film producer and friend Lord Puttnam said the industry would be "very shocked" to lose their "very well-loved" colleague.

"He started as a writer, he was not a stylist as a director," he said. "He saw himself as a storyteller and his films were very well told, beautifully made and beautifully acted."

UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who was directed by Minghella in a Labour Party broadcast before the 2005 General Election, also paid tribute. He said: "He was one of Britain's greatest creative talents, one of our finest screen writers and directors, a great champion of the British film industry and expert on literature and opera."

Minghella had an operation for cancer last week, his representatives said.

Leslee Dart said: "The surgery had gone well and they were very optimistic. But he developed a haemorrhage last night and they were not able to stop it."

He died at about 0500 GMT on Tuesday at the Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith, west London.

Minghella's other roles included being chairman of the British Film Institute.

He had also directed a TV episode of book The No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency.

A 90-minute pilot, directed by Minghella and co-written with Richard Curtis, is due to be broadcast on BBC One on Easter Sunday. BBC film correspondent Tom Brook, speaking in New York, said Minghella was held in "very high regard by the artistic community".

"He's certainly one of the top directors of his generation in Britain and, in Hollywood he was definitely held in high esteem," he said.

Minghella began his career as a writer with his early radio plays winning several awards.

He made his directorial debut in Truly, Madly, Deeply, in 1991.

He went on to write and direct film adaptations of Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient and Patricia Highsmith's The Talented Mr Ripley.

In 1999, he was nominated for an Oscar for writing The Talented Mr Ripley screenplay.

He also directed 2003's Cold Mountain, starring Law, Kidman and Renee Zellweger, who won the best supporting actress Oscar for the film.

In 2005, Minghella directed his first opera, an English National Opera (ENO) production of Madama Butterfly.

Another masterpiece of Scorsese's, fantastic performances by Joe Pesci and De Niro, definitely one of my favorite movies.
It's a very good film, but to be honest I can't help but seeing it as the weaker version of Goodfellas.

Anyway saw No country for old men yesterday. Excellent, an unorthodox piece of art. Although the ending was somewhat unsatisfying as you expect the three stories to tie into a climax, yet they don't even remotely do so. I guess that adds to what makes it an unorthodox movie though.

The Shawshank Redemption.

I ignored this movie for ages.I remember reading some stuff about it and i was like 'A prison based movie?Big deal'.A friend forced me to watch it today, and boy was i wrong! Its an absoloute masterpiece. The story isnt complicated, its very simple, and insanely touching. It nearly brought me on the verge of tears, and im not ashamed of it:D.This movie is phenomenal.Ive always considered Tim Robbins a waste of sperm, but this movie completley changed my opinion of him.Brilliant performance.Morgan Freeman was spectacular too.At the end i thought the movie would have a bittersweet ending, with Robbins escaping,Freeman getting released and both of them living seperate lives, but the fact that it was a happy ending made it a lot more enjoyable.

An absoloute gem.Definatley one of the finest, most touching moves of all time.

Troy is a OK film and only OK. Eric Bana single handedly saved if from becoming bad. I blame the director for the shortcomings of the film, namely because he had everything at his disposal: budget, a great cast, landscapes, story, etc. It was very disappointing for me to see one of the greatest stories ever become a mediocre film. Other than epic battle scenes there is really no substance to Troy. The scene between Peter O Toole and Brad Pritt, where Prius begs Achilles for Hector's body, was weak. The sad thing is it could have been the best scene of the movie.

Kingdom of Heaven is a lot better than Troy. I'm not saying its a great film, only that it's much better than Troy. Granted Bloom should have been better, but I thought Scott did a much better job at telling the story than the director of Troy. Kingdom of Heaven is much more visually pleasing and hands above Troy in both acting and cinematography.

That said, I think they have one thing in common...Brendan Gleason. That mofo is in everything.

Oh yeah, finally saw all of No Country For Old Men. It's great film that I hated because of the ending, but they I realized it was being true to the book. Now I think its brilliant. It has one of the greatest villains of all time.

Epic movies like 'troy', 'kingdom of heaven', 'alexander', etc.. are all bogus IMO. Historically inaccurate and insulting. Also the character building isn't very impressive at all but if you put swords and some douche on a screen then apparently it will sell enough tix for the studio to cover the catering.

But I like eric bana as an actor. He was fuckin hood in 'munich'
