So when it comes to the theme of prison, brutality etc one that made a much bigger impression on me was Sleepers (1996). Then on the subject of being in prison so long you can't function outside I don't really recall anything specific. Personally that whole thing about the prison library was quite dull to me. Finally the financial scams story was interesting, but it was nothing really exceptional, there's a lot of movies that tell these kinds of stories more effectively.

Sleepers is a good movie I agree but it doesn't come close to Shawshank IMO. Both tell a story about friendship, prison and how it screws up your life, but the story didn't get to me on the level Shawshank did. Like I said the characters were so well made in Shawshank and so realistic, at least I thought so, from the old fart Briggs, to that cocky newguy, to Red and Andy. Sleepers lacked in that department IMO and De Niro kinda saved it for me with his untypical role as a priest. Though out of the two, Sleepers' story is a lot more realistic and a lot more shocking. Still far from SR.

I actually thought the characters very plain and obvious. Red was not really that interesting, although he carried the story, Andy was pretty good, but the rest were practically stand ins I'd say.

Harsh Times, not quite what I expected but it was ok. Christian Bale was very good.

Also, The Last King Of Scotland, simply amazing performance by Whitaker, great movie.

Well, you know it is a bunch of hitmen all heading for one person, it takes a lot for them to get going; I thought introducing the hitmen took way too much time, especially the scenes where Ben Affleck just talks bullshit.

Once it gets going the movie moves a bit faster but the whole timing of everything is very much unproportional. What is really strange is how they end the movie, you think that it is smart but at the same time you think that it could have been much better.
