i know folks who like it better than the matrix. when i look at the matrix sequals i'd even agree.
I don't agree. I thought the acting was poor, and the pacing of the plot was all over the place. The gun kata thing was somewhere between awesomely cool and absolutely hilarious.

I like when the do the Bicentennial BMX-ing consisting of riding around a parking lot on penny-farthers and trying to do stunts.

"Who the fuck rides these things; I don't understand why they just don't make two wheels the same size."

"Hear ye, hear ye!"

Maybe your standards are too high :p
I have standards?

I saw Pan's Labyrinth last night. It's very good. I enjoyed the change of pace from the norm.

I have one reservation - the fascist captain was the single most one dimensional character I've ever seen get that much screen time. He was evil. Then he was nasty. Then he was more evil. Evil again. Cruel. Evil. Shaving. Evil. Evil. Evil. More evil. Evil. Evil. Evil. Shaving. Evil. Evil. Evil shaving... I got the point after the first seventeen times he was evil. Then I wondered if they'd do anything with him. You know, a redeeming moment, where he recognises the pain he's caused, or regrets something. Nope.

Evil captains aside, it's a really good film, and I recommend it.

I loved it a lot and I do agree that insisting on him being that evil was a bit more than it should, but the movie is charming that you forget about that.

mik, did you read Dune? Seen the movie?
Yes and yes. The book is awesome and the film is possibly the worst adaptation I've ever seen.

If you're referring to the Baron Harkonnen, he's a much less central figure than the Captain. He is a callous, power hungry, greedy, manipulative, narcissistic, massively obese, drug addicted paedophile, sure, but I think it's okay to go over the top with a side character. More importantly, the deeply manipulative, political side of his character gives the impression that there's something going on inside his head other than 'Franco good; rebels bad; kill; maim; destroy; need a shave'. The only nod to this kind of thing in Pan's Labyrinth is in the two scenes which reference the Captain's father, and even that isn't developed. Instead, we get scenes where he's utterly callous towards and about his wife. Harkonnen at least showed some fondness towards his nephews.

"Apocalypto"

^ wow what a movie  I think I'm gonna be a big admirer of Mel Gibson movies.

The movie is partially intended as a political allegory about civilizations in decline. Said Gibson in September of 2006: "The precursors to a civilization that’s going under are the same, time and time again... What’s human sacrifice if not sending guys off to Iraq for no reason?"[8]

^ word, man.
