Yes and yes. The book is awesome and the film is possibly the worst adaptation I've ever seen.
If you're referring to the Baron Harkonnen, he's a much less central figure than the Captain. He is a callous, power hungry, greedy, manipulative, narcissistic, massively obese, drug addicted paedophile, sure, but I think it's okay to go over the top with a side character. :smile: More importantly, the deeply manipulative, political side of his character gives the impression that there's something going on inside his head other than 'Franco good; rebels bad; kill; maim; destroy; need a shave'. The only nod to this kind of thing in Pan's Labyrinth is in the two scenes which reference the Captain's father, and even that isn't developed. Instead, we get scenes where he's utterly callous towards and about his wife. Harkonnen at least showed some fondness towards his nephews.
