Not yet Tommy, worth the effort to get em?
Dunno, I wanted to ask you guys :p
I got the first part today but haven't seen it. Found out that Fricke was cinematographer for the first part and is the beginning of the Baraka, Samsara mold.
Chronos is another Fricke creation I'm getting.

The Hurricane was pretty good (although very american) while Crank: High Voltage was.. if the first movie was ridiculously bad, this one was so bad it wasn't even funny. Maybe would've been a better experience on a bigger screen, but I somehow doubt it :D

Elite squad: The Enemy Within (Tropa Elite 2).

Hands down THE best movie sequel I seen, so much more different and broad then the first one, so many sequels try to reproduce the first or follow along in same vein, but this director pretty much reinvented his approach and showed a more vibrant side to his crime tale of corruption. Much deeper dive into the abyss of "the system" that mainstains the machinery of that society, considerably more developed story of Capitaó Nascimento (what a badass, in more ways then one). Needless to say you arent just watching an action movie anymore like the first one.

I liked both. I don't think one was that much better than the other, and by the second it's become a bit of a cliché in Brazilian cinema.

Yes, it would actually make alot of sense. The story is much in tune in 2nd one. The first one was a gritty action movie, hint of the background story of the widespread corruption, but essentially it was just a menacing cop action flick, 2nd one doubly more in depth and coherent tale. Watch the full story on 2nd, then the first one afterwards for the badass action.

exactly, and unlike swag i dont think it's cliche at all, it's really well done

Not saying it wasn't a great movie or two. But Brazilian cinema is struggling with these as stereotypes right now the way the US was with Westerns in the 1950s and reality TV shows in the 2000s.

You have a point, but the fact thats what you mainly see being depicted of brazilian society in general isnt a downside for the movie itself, which is very well done and quite real in its narrative. Plus the theme of the movie is universal (issues that are more real for some societies then others, but all the same not just a brazilian thing). This movie was basically a Brazilian "The Wire" ;)

Yes, but I actually thought José Padilha was ultimately stronger in his storytelling on Bus 174 than either of the great Tropa de Elite flicks. And that movie wasn't as formulaic in the way that the awesome City of God created as a halo effect.
