Ah. If you love the book and are not familiar with the musical, then I don't know if you'll like it. Do you like musicals in general? Les Mis is a "sung-through" musical, meaning very little un-sung dialogue.

They rush through it, to a degree, but I find it works on stage. The main storyline is really just the relationship between Valjean and Javert, with others bringing their own stories along.
Used to love Notre Dame de Paris musical, the one with Garou and Mervil in it, but more often than not in my experience musicals are either crappy written or performed horribly. The Latvian rock-operas and musicals being an obvious exception though, they're pretty excellent :p
I think I'm gonna give it a try without any big expectations.

Oh yeah? I've never been a huge fan of the French/Quebecois musicals (NDDP, Starmania, etc.), ironically enough. I'm more of the Cole Porter, Sondheim type of girl. Not to mention Chess, which is one of my all-time favourites

Just saw it... They rushed through the whole damn thing, and god was it a shame. Les Miserables basically has enough storyline for 5 films or something like that so when you decide to rush through the whole damn story in 150 minutes without ever taking 2 minutes to reflect on the story and characters, then shallowness is unavoidable. The singing was fine and the acting was good, but when the songs are as similar as they are, then you are going to get fed up with the songs and absolutely hate the sung dialogue eventually.
Peter Jackson could have turned that into 20 three hour movies then :p

Just watched The Hobbit. I can't see why people are bitching that much, found it to be quite entertaining. Could've spent some more times on the characters as I don't really feel I know any of them better than after they all met up at B's house.

Indeed.

I felt they did as best a job they could in the time-frame. How do you expand upon the individual characteristics of so many dwarves in such a small space?
