The Wrestler - Good, even though we have all seen this story time and time again. Acting showcase for the 3 leads.
Have we? I havent watched a film about a wrestler that has fallen out of commercial failure and has found out he could die. I also have seen a film that is a social commentary on the way that being a performer can affect you irl. Im not sure which standard narrative you are associating it with either, enlighten me.

It's the story about an old(er) guy desperately trying to cling on to his old life, but slowly realising he has made some mistakes in the past, so he tries to make amends.
There's the estranged daughter whose love/trust he tries to regain. Which at first doesn't work out & then it does (won't go into any details about how it ends though as that is a spoiler).
There's the woman he falls in love with. Which at first doesn't work out, later on it does.
...

Sure, setting it in a wrestling environment (which felt truly authentic by the way) makes it feel a fresh, but it doesn't make it feel new, to me at least.

Funny thing, after I watched the movie, I scanned through the making of & there was this guy (the producer iirc) who put it really well, something along the lines of: this is undeniably clichéd storytelling, so we had to make sure that the other qualities of the movie (acting, setting, ...) were so great that you forget about the clichés. And they did succeed in that imo.

I watched Hangover for the third time this weekend and while I was watching it I tried really hard to see those racist parts people are raving about. I found nothing. What exactly is racist in that movie, can anyone link me with some scenes?
as you can clearly see, he is way too far gone. no hope there :sergio:

If someone shouting at a man of asian descent 'i hate godzilla' isnt racism, or giving the only character in the film of a none caucasian descent a stupid voice, and a low comedic role in which he is made to look stupid isnt racism to you then i do question your moral intergrity.

From what I see in that scene, I see 3 white guys and 3 Asian guys. The Asian's have a fairy with a funny voice, the white's have a stupid retarded fat man. It seems to me like a fair trade off. :shifty:

you don't question anything. you already made up your mind at first glance, and it is never wrong because you are so smart

No, there's no racism there, sorry.
To your measure.

You know if i didnt view the film as such a cynical entity i could almost agree with you, but it is and i cant.

What is shallow about what he said?
Half of my degree is studying film, analysing socio-political contexts, gerne conventions, codes and standard conventions, audiences studies alongside standard film/narrative theory - todorov, propp, uses and gratifications etc. etc. So i view study of films that does not go into that ammount of detail as shallow, because it is in comparison to the deep studies i have to do all the time. And when i watch a film all of that stuff is what is going through my head, which i dare say is the reason i end up with different conclusions to different films than most of you.

I didn't think it was racist, I mean most hollywood comedy movies make fun of certain people in each movie, sometimes its in a racist intentional way, sometimes its pure comedy, depends really
but given the relations between usa and china it's a two-sided game from both medias
I understand that comedy is the art of offending and getting away with it, and most things are fine, post modern racism can be very funny (using racism in a way to mock racists, without having any meaning behind what you are saying) etc. But people like Bernand Manning i just find despicable.

The most racist part of The Hangover.

Just cause someone tweaks on crystal method does not make him a murderer.

And last time I checked, just cause a tiger has stripes doesn't make him want to fuck black ladies.
