By the way, if you haven't watched The Red Shoes, you definitely should. It's a great one. Powell and Pressburger made quite a few good films together. Black Narcissus, A Matter of Life and Death, and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp come to mind.
Or Pink Narcissus .
I loved The Red Shoes, it's a great movie, yes!
Although my favorite musicals are Phantom of the Paradise, The Wal,l and Guys and Dolls.
And Across The Universe.

Any awesome movies like... Wings of Desire?
Oh that movie is beautiful .

I will mention films that seem sad to me, but they are not similar to WOD: King and Country, Seconds, Johnny Got His Gun, Splendor in the Grass, La Enfermedad del Domingo(Sunday's Illness)...
I also love Juste La Fin Du Monde, but I don't know if I would recommend it.

Truffaut is a genius. And beyond his cinema, I recommend the obligatory reading of his book "Le Cinéma selon Hitchcock ".

Enough with the gloominess! Not all films can be about poverty in 18th century Russia. Time to watch some proper musicals:

Of course The Red Shoes it's a musical. It's not a musical like The Wall or Wizard of Oz, but it is :shifty:.

Phantom of the Paradise it's funnier than The Sound of Music :lol3:.
Wat? How are you qualifying what a musical is here? The Red Shoes isn’t telling a story through song and music. It’s a drama about the rise and fall of a prima ballerina and the manipulation of her life and career by those around her. There’s no overarching singing or musical storyline guiding it along. It’s very clearly not a musical even if music plays a large part in the film as it does in numerous other non-musical dramatic films.

In the 90s it was adapted into a Broadway musical by adding lyrical songs into the storyline.

Musical film is usually defined by having songs sung by the characters woven into the narrative. There’s nothing of the sort in The Red Shoes. You could call it a ballet/dance film because of the lengthy performance of The Red Shoes shown, but even that is just a mere few moments of the film as a whole.

I know, but that's still considered a musical. And that's why I agree to recommend it to people who hate conventional musicals, or musicals in general. It's suitable for Dostoevsky :baus:.

Last week I was watching Pleins Feux Sur l'Assassin, but I fell asleep. I don't know if it's cause I was tired or I was really getting bored :shifty:.
Has anyone seen that movie? Is it worth continuing it?

Curious to see this film. It's playing in January at the Italian film festival in Vancouver. Anyone know much about the Grossi Gang? @GordoDeCentral @Dostoevsky @Völler etc etc

No, I haven't heard about an obscure Italian gang from the 19th century.

On another note I finally managed to catch Shoplifters. Definitely a good film - very good even - but a bit disappointing considering its accolades.

Also, Roma is out on Netflix, so people should definitely watch that if they haven't already.
