If I interpret your post correctly, I think we agree.
I liked how old-fashioned it was (typical Tornatore), and how it almost reminded me of a Hitchcock movie. But it was indeed a little too ordinary and safe, and the twist was, as you say, very predictable. Still, I enjoyed it. And it has, like all Tornatore movies, a nice Morricone score.
