That old core didn't play a lot anymore but their mentality was still important for the locker room.
And like the other poster said about poor signing of midfield after MVPP and spending so much money for Higuain. While Higuain himself wasn't that bad but Juve only got 2 best years of him. The decline of this team was started from that and continue with more big signings for attack. Allegri was good at adapting with this situation so he changed his formation to focus on the wings rather than from middle like when he had MVPP. But eventually this team got exposed
I was actually happy when Sarri was hired. In the sense that management would actually sign players to suit the coach needs.
But no they still made purchases based on opportunity instead of what the coach needs.
This current management might be able to fix that mess though
My point isn't about Allegri vs Sarri vs Pirlo but people here like to blame the coaches after poor results.
Look at Solksjaer at United, he is average coach but he has unlimited support to get good players and now United is back as a good team again.
Even Zidane and Pep can't replicate what they have done before.

Chiellini - Should have been entirely replaced 2-3 seasons ago. Been costing us as many points as he has earned and is a constant liability. Unreliable also physically, at this age
Bonucci - Been unreliable for years and also isnt Juve starter material.
Cuadrado - He has been a top 2 player in the team for the last 4 years. We are already getting his maximum output.
Sandro - Dead horse, he should definitely step up, but a sane person wouldnt wait for it to happen, after 3 years have already passed.
Who else with experience are we talking about ?
- Dybala? unreliable, but definitely a boost if he can play on his top level, and we need that
- De Sciglio/Berna/Ramsay ? they better not step up or on to the field at all.
- Tek - We obviously want Tek to play at an acceptable level, but he is not gonna help us, he just shouldnt cost us
- Rabiot / Morata I dont have any high hopes for.

Im a big fan of Allegri, but lets not pretend that the decline didnt start with his team in his last year, it was obvious for everyone and most of the football world agreed that he had to go. He had lost the players and some of his sanity from this Juve circus as well. Just a shame that he didnt bring the management with him, who deserved to go more than him.
Im terms of Champions League, its always a bit random what happens there, so judging coaches on a few seasons with a handful of CL games is difficult. So many factors plays into that. But I must admit, it was a huge step down in quality and prestige, to go from a knockout to top teams like Real Madrid and Barca, to get bullied by Ajax schoolboys. That is a huge drop. And then it was cemented by Sarris subsequent utter failure against a similar or actually worse rated team in Lyon. That deserved the sack by itself. We needed that season to bounce back from the previous bad season, but instead the rot festered and grew permanent with him and Pirlo in charge.
Allegri has the change to prove to everyone that he actually CAN take a team and fix it and make them winners again. It would be an impressive feat.

I agree with everything you said except that it was way worse under Sarri. It was more or less the same. Small city brass grandpa Sarri was "just" a terrible fit in the corporate professional Juve locker room. It was obvious that was going to happen and that made it a bad appt. Pep Pirlo appt was just wtf. Still dazed and confused by it. Centuries later, historians still won't be able to solve that mystery/puzzle.
The core of the team is Chiellini, Bonucci, Dybala, Cuadrado, Sandro. I think these guys who have been to CL final with Juve and have won countless league games should step up and guide the team. And then there are guys like Loca, Chiesa, Rabiot, Danilo who we hope have what it takes to be part of the new core
Buffon left Juventus because he did not feel like being the number 2 to a keeper whose performance was inferior to his own.
