Unfortunately that napoli game, and basically Zaza's goal worked like a double edge sword. Like I said after that game. this setup is way too conservative and aimless going forward, banking on individual moments and out of nothing goals. It may work with a cm like Vidal and Pogba shifting more central in attack (not force to play like a typical winger) but with current lineup it takes our best players out of the game.

Hopefully with return of AlexSandro, Asamoah and Pereyra we have more options for return game,but It's very disappointing because watching our first goal, his favorite 4-3-1-2 woulda killed Bayern's backline today.

I appreciate Hernanes' effort, but the reason he looked fine today was because we had no build in our attacks, keeping the ball for a few extra seconds it's something he's always been able to do.

I really don't like the 4-4-2 system with Pogba on the left, it seems very imbalanced and the players don't look comfortable. Its also very narrow and forces Dybala to come out too the left.

I actually think 3-5-2 would have worked well/still can work against this Bayern. The key is probably Alex Sandro having a good game and providing service for Mandzukic.

His initial gameplan was Conte worhty pussy as fuck and could have already copsted us the tie... but his subs were spot on. Whatever he said to the guys on the break did the difference..lets hope is not too late.

UNlike some of you... i saw the heranes sub with good eyes...i mean... after the horror show from the first half...we had like nothing to lose...as we already were without pants and virginity. Nanes was a wtf card and it worked. In the end, he is an offensive sub when deployed close to the 3/4 of the field, and we needed all the help possible because were trailing 2 down.

I have noticed that all our players have problem controlling the ball. Whether is the first touch, or running with the ball. Its always the same, either our players wont control the ball with their first touch, or if they manage to do it, they overhit it when they run with it and the oposing players get to the ball first. yeh, sadly this has been common since the beggining of the conte era...we simply dont have technical midfielders. The exception are pogba who is the most skilled and even then he sometimes fails and to some extend chessio.

We have good workhorses, but we also sorely lack technical dudes who can get the ball and transition smoothly into offensive. The bayern midfield was exquisite at this today.

We didn't even try to get the ball from their feet at the 1st half, we didn't even try to play football, we completely bowed down for them!

I don't understand. Conte tries to impose our game plan on Bayern and fails. Haters say he should have defended deep and countered. Allegri instructs the team to do just that (stay deep and counter) and haters say he should have tried to impose our game plan on Bayern, the very same thing they criticize Conte for doing.


Once again Hindsight is easy.

Playing a Pep team, the standard strategy that exposes his teams' weakness (even his Barca) is to defend deep and counter attack. Chelsea did it with Hiddink. Mourinho did it with Inter and with Madrid. Ancelotti did it with Madrid. I don't think anyone thought we can impose our 3-5-2 on Bayern before the match. FFS we didnt even try to do it against Napoli.

During the match, the countering strategy miserably failed and we conceded. Allegri didn't have any alternative other than trying to play our normal game. He tries it and it works very well to the surprise of everyone including Bayern themselves. Now and only in hindsight, after having conceded twice with what seemed like the best plan prior to the match, we think that we should have imposed our normal game plan from the start.

Allegri did not know and it was very difficult to foresee that our normal game strategy would work that well. We now know it does because he was forced to use it.

Defending deep against superior opposition is not a problem at all. When u do that and don't have a counter attack or anyway of hurting them then it's suicidal and pussy tactics.

If he was going to defend so deep then he needed to have Morata on the pitch for quick transitions of counter attack with Morata, Dybala and Cuadrado.

Complete failure from Allegri in the first half and pretty much cost us a chance of winning.

Two things
1. I think we couldnt get the ball to Mandzukic feet in the first half to hold the ball up like we thought he could
2. If Barza played up to his standard then we could have gone in to the break 0-0 and possibly thats what he wanted so he could open up in the second half and gain control after they tired out a bit.
Having bad tactics and not being able to execute against a top 3 team is different. Im not sure anyone knows how the game would end up if we had attacked earlier but they could have scored early as well just like in 2013 and we would be bashing him that we didnt respect their potent attack and we should have slowed the game down. We got out of it with a draw and now we need to handle business in Munich

though that may have been the framework of allegri's idea, on the contrary, i thought we were being run ragged in the first half. bayern had us playing a strenuous brand of constant defense in the final third, covering passing angles while attempting to shift marking duties correctly with every pass. it's not like 'a shield wall' to sit back easy and stay compact with little movement.

ultimately, the same way they theoretically have too much quality to let approach a transitioning defense in the final third (hence, sitting back), we do as well.

in my opinion, it doesn't work to swallow their attacking pressure. their strengths are in attacking movement and repossession via pressing/squeezing possession out. i think we need to challenge them in the midfield -- though there is the question as to whether we have the stamina, which brings me back to your good point abt what very well may have been allegri's scheme.

He failed miserably in this game, facing Pep's barça many times he should've known that they press like crazy. Morata should've played this game, his best suited at holding the ball, exploiting spaces...
Anytime we recovered the ball we tried to pass to the MF which is a beginner's mistake against Pep's team because they press in the middle. We should've skipped the MF and played long balls to Mandzukic and Dybala.
Playing this 4-4-2 is shit. Either play the 4-3-3 and instruct your wingers to defend or don't play with wingers at all. Our 2 man MF was easily dominated especiallay with Khedira barely running.
