The number one priority that i believe a defender must have whether he's a CB or a fullback is being great at "defending" thats whats really counts. Give me a fullback who can defend really well and has a decent cross on him and i'll be more than happy.

In the last 20 years we didn't have a whole bunch of really great fullbacks, the only fullback that i can think of that was really great both at defending and in the attack is probably Zambrotta. But The one common thing that all of our fullbacks had in that period is that they were all great at defending.

Players like Di livio, pessotto... weren't the fastest fullbacks or the best dribblers. They were great at defending + they can cross well thats all what they've got. Yet we reached 3 champions league finals with them and won so many trophies domestically.

People here rate Caceres pretty high and they want him pretty bad because of 3 reasons: 1- He works hard. 2- Decent going forward. 3- He's young.

The guy's positioning is terrible, he's defending is horrible, he's decisions in general are pretty poor. All these things makes him (atleast to me) a pretty bad choice for the future.

By the way, being young doesn't mean that he will be a great defender in the future. I wish if it was that simple....

1. i agree. but there are 2 kinds of full backs. the ones who can just defend. and the ones who can win you a game. i think that caceres can be one who will belong to the second category. of course not if he stays like he is now. but positioning and defending is something that caceres can learn. talent, speed and technique are attributes that someone can't learn...

2. you forgot thuram. both of these were not fullbacks who can just defend. they were fullbacks who could win you a game...

3. of course you can win titles with such players. liverpool also has won the CL with worse players like biscan and traore. but if you can have something better, you will have even more chances of winning something...

4 the first three just make me think that it will be worthwhile to spent time on the kid and hire a good coach that can teach him the last 3.

5. of course. i never said that he will be. i said that he has the potential and that he can be a great defender. he just has the time to work on his disadvantages. if there was a player exactly like martin and he was 30 years old, i wouldn't even mind posting in his thread.

anyway i didn't say that martin is ready to be our starting fullback. i just said that i can see some things in him that show him that he can be something special...

He's not even a right back. He's a winger that even plays AMR very often. Sampdoria used him as a wingback so people got confused that he's a RB, which Maggio clearly isn't.

It amuses me that The Playa thinks it is okay for a player to get sent off because 'he didn't mean to get it' and that Caceres is a good replacement for Zebina.

When replacing Zebina, I want a player that has at least half a brain and not another one who is going to make endless stupid decisions.

how can he win the game, when he is more often involved givign a chance to the opponent, than being involved in a goal-situation for us ?

i said that caceres has the POTENTIAL to be one fullback that will have the ability to win us a game. and not caceres is a player that can win us a game...

the origin of my thought was, that lippi did transform zambrotta who was a midfielder back then into a fullback .. perhaps we can get a midfielder that is doing well defensively and offensively into a fullback as well and shift caceres up the pitch to take camos place

canna WAS a wold class defender. there is no doubt. right now he is an average one. he has experience but nothing more. ferdinand and pique(or puyol) are great defenders right now.

i think that canna who plays right now for juve is at least half the player that canna who played some years before was.

Im not deying that, Im just saying that both Pique and Ferdinand ATM aren't any better than Canna.
