Official: Martin Caceres on loan at Juventus

Uruguay defender Martin Caceres will be playing for Juventus. The official notice arrived today with the transfer from Barcellona which foresees a loan for a year with an option on the definite transfer to Juventus.

The player, who last week underwent the medical tests and signed the contract with the bianconeri, was able to train with his new team mates yesterday, thanks to a go ahead from Barcellona. The completion of the transfer in bianconero was formulated today.

The Juventus sports director Alessio Secco expressed his satisfaction: «With the signing of Caceres we have concluded the transfer market signings and we are providing the coach with a quality defender who notwithstanding his age has already a vast international experience. His technical and personal characteristics – added Secco – should guarantee a quick adaptation to the group and Italian football».

Caceres: talent and personality

Born in Montevideo on the 7th April 1987, Josè Martin Caceres is one of the most promising young defenders in international football. Having been brought up in Defensor Sporting, he made himself known for his charisma, winning himself the captain band at 19 years of age. Also thanks to his early call-up with the Uruguay national team he was noted by European clubs and tried the big leap in 2007.

Villareal are the first to sign him, immediately transferring him to Recreativo Huelva with which team he had a season as protagonist, helping the team to avoid relegation and getting noted by Barcellona who signed him.

It is the beginning of the 2008/09 season, an unforgettable one for the blaugrana, who coached by Guardiola, managed to win the treble. In just a few months he won the Champions League, the Liga and the Coppa del Re. Caceres contributed by making important appearances in all the competitions.

Hence his transfer to Juventus, putting his skills at the disposal of Cito Ferrara especially the one of an all-rounder. The young South American can play in any role in the defence even though he has made his name mostly as a central defender.

With the signing of Caceres, Juventus have rekindled the tradition of Uruguay players which began in the 1940s with Raul Banfi and which developed in later years with players of the likes of Carini, O’Neill, Zalayeta, Olivera, Fonseca (Caceres’ agent) and especially Montero, the defender which all Juventus supporters hope Caceres will follow.

Not taking anything from the quality signings of Diego and Melo, I think this one is the most exciting transfer for me.

Zebina - Cannavaro - Chiellini - Caceres

If all are fit, we are about to see some great overlapping this season.

I have not really seen both of them play alot, so I cant really make a good judgment on who is the better player/defender.
Drawing comparison since both are young, able to play multiple roles in defense and while we lost one to Genoa, we gain the other from Barcelona ...
In fact if we buy Martin.C outright next yr, it will be roughly the same amount Genoa will be paying us for Mimo ... rite ??

Criscito Vs Caceres, wats the thoughts ?

He is right footed though, correct? Would not make much sense to have him on the left.

Yes I believe he is.

Since probably our main CB's this season are Cannavaoro & Chiellini with Legrottaglie as their main sub, I hope Ciro will use him as a full back instead.

IMO he should play CB, but he is decent option as an RB, but besides being reasonably mobile and good with the mobile, he approaches the RB position as a CB, bit like Ivanovic in Chelsea, not really suits him the best. But prefer him to Grygera already, who annoyed the fuck outta me against Inter.
