ok guys, after seeing bozi switch to linux. my windows crashed as usual this time thanks to a bloody virus, but before i do my switch i need to know the answers for the following:

1- which linux should i download is it ubuntu or sth else and from which site ( if possible)

2- would applications such as sn messenger, skype, football manger, etc work or will they need specially designed applications or versions?

3- will i need to get the supporting software for my sound card and video card or does the operating system autoatically sorts it out with out the need for there respective softwares?

4 can i download linux now and just install it while i still have windows or its not possible unless i format the partition that has windows on it?

thanks in advance its much appreciated.
1-Yes Ubuntu. Go to Ubuntu.com and download from there.

2-Yes all messengers work. as for FM, it does work, I did it before and many others, but its kinda andvanced for a Linux noob. google it, or ask here.

3-most probably it will all work out of the box, if not, I am sure there are workarounds. Only one way to find out. Download Ubuntu :D

4-Yes you can dual boot. The installer will take you through it. It will resize your drive...and put ubuntu on it. You will get both Windows and Linux.

Ok you downloaded an .iso file right? Burn it using Nero or whatever burner you use.

Pop in the CD and restart, you might need to get into the BIOS by pressing F12 and change boot sequence to CD. This will launch a livecd (will not change anything in your system, only an install will) for you where you will get the Ubuntu desktop just like the way you will get it when you install it. Play around and explore try to find out if your video cards and sound cards are working....once you feel you are ready to install double click on install on the desktop.

Of course if you have questions while installing you can launch firefox and ask here or google whatever question or problem you have.

Wait a minute, what do you mean by crash? Please elaborate and tell us everything man, what errors you get, how did you reproduce the crash, everything!!

Oh and btw is it a laptop or desktop? And there is no such thing as "A PC can't handle Linux" All PC's can, it has to do more with who is handling the PC itself ;)

i have a PC (not very good its time to confess i have an E-machine...but i got it free) as i was installing ubuntu it would go though most of the process, get to intsalling the softwear, it would stall and then after about an hour would say it cannot complete this. it wiped all the windows and everything else off teh pC and i had to get a guy i know to come and re-install windows because i was stuck with nothing. :shifty:

i was sure i did something wrong and tried it again with teh same results, i checked the CD integrity before i attempted to install and that should eb fine. this guy told me i would not get linux working on this so..............

well, u dont really need to mount it. if you're using Nero to burn the disc, you'll find an option which says 'burn image to disc'. select that and then choose the ISO file. it'll burn that onto the disc. and yes, it will be a bootable cd.

has anyone tried this???

Playing a song with the tag "title" as "Amarok" and "artist" as "Mike Oldfield" produces the following OSD popup:

"One of Mike Oldfield's best pieces of work, Amarok, inspired the name behind the audio-player you are currently using. Thanks for choosing Amarok!

Mark Kretschmann
Max Howell
Chris Muehlhaeuser
The many other people who have helped make Amarok what it is"
