Here's an interesting story I came across (a little late in the day I agree). The New York Stock Exchange is migrating it's computer mainframe to Unix and Linux servers. A major task without doubt and it's great to see such a massive institution putting it's faith in Linux.

From the article: "The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is migrating off a 1,600 millions of instructions per second (MIPS) mainframe to IBM System p servers running AIX and x86 Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) servers running Linux, with the first part of the move going live today."

This is a smart move from the NYSE who will save a lot of money by taking this step. I also think it's a great boon for Linux and shows how far the operating system has come in the last 10 years. I have to say though I'm surprised they didn't consider forking out a fortune to Microsoft for a Windows NT based system instead ;)

ok guys i have a wee problem, i downloaded Ubuntu, burnt it to disk, checked the integrity of it and it was fine. so i restarted, it ran through a lot of its checks, all ok then it goes to a blank screen and...............


well, nothing! i was thinking it was running a check through before starting but absolutely nothing happens except a black screen

any ideas?

nah seriously,i was thinking its my cd drive, i have an external one that i usuallu use as this one is not great but its reading the disk fine. yet for some reason it just does not kick in after running through all its checks

Perhaps there's some bustup with your video card. You could try the alternate install cd.
i downloaded ununtu 7.10 desktop edition, so what should i download instead?

beginning to wish i ahd paid attention in computing class beyond discovering how to find porn
