vlat: the flash plugin sucks in opera. I get framedropping and opera starts to choke more often than not. Somehow Firefox copes better.
:agree:

but still, after the handful of distros i've tried, it's most stable in PCLOS. it was never stable in Ubuntu. sure, FF handles it better... waaaaaaaaaaaaay better i'd say, but the browsing experience i find in Opera is irreplaceable!

I see, maybe it's ubuntu then.

For what it's worth my browser usage is now 70% opera 30% ubuntu. Sadly that's necessary to work around opera bugs.

Lots of lossless music.

Stay away from Gentoo, if you simply can't, just install Sabayon. Don't listen to what Martin says. :D
Actually listening to Martin was one of the best things I did, when it comes to Linux :p

So any initial impressions on Gutsy? Here are mine:

1-Touchpad worked out of the box on my laptop, didn't work on the previous two versions, kernel hacking was required.

2-Just love how compiz is enabled by default, however there was no way I could configure how it behaves, only three levels (none, medium, full) of eye candy. Which is kinda stupid. You will need to install an extra package (can't remember the name, but it has compiz and setting in it:D USE TAB ;))

3-My Linksys wireless card on my desktop didn't work at all, I needed to install ndiswrapper. I wrote up a howto, check my blog:D

4-Quick switch works great, gotta love it. Even though it didn't appear on my desktop which was upgraded, while I fresh installed on my laptop.

5-I still have to test some hardware that didn't work by default. i.e webcam and AV converter.

So any initial impressions on Gutsy?
1. Installed smoothly

2. Compiz not enabled by default since I'm using Kubuntu, which always seems to lag behind Ubuntu when it comes to the new features

3. Wireless works perfectly, finally comparable to Windows (as much as I hate to say it)

4. My external HDD didn't (and still doesnt' work). I get the cryptic error "permissions denied" when I try to access it.

5. Codec installation still involved manually downloading the w32 codecs and extracting them into /usr/lib/win32. Maybe there's a better way built-in, but that's still too much work if you're aiming at the luddite community.

As for the HD, some tweaking in fstab is probably nessecary. If its just only that disk and you don't use it as often I would just do a chmod everytime I plug it or better yet a "kdesu konqueror" :p

Codecs installed automatically under Ubuntu I just double clicked on a media file and i got a prompt to install gstreamer codecs....Flash also on FF.

So the linux phenomenon is a funny thing. I go to school with a bunch of fairly bright and knowledgeable people, in the general domain of computers. But when it comes to linux there is very little skill here. Most of them run Windows (wtf), some have Macs. Now, there seems to be some curiosity about linux, cause I've seen a bunch of people run Ubuntu on their laptops, but it's evident that they just installed it cause all the settings are default and all that. And they complain about these really simple things like omg compiz not enabled by default, how on earth do I change that.

In short, you guys are who've been playing around with linux for a little while (especially those who only have a few months exposure to it) are like gurus in comparison, you could open a shack on campus and sell support. :D

One guy I spoke to said he was disappointed because "linux was supposed to be user friendly" and I say "well in some ways it is, it depends on what you expect" and he goes "I expect it to work just like windows". I mean d'oh. :D

Maybe this could help:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=528772

I never faced this problem.

Anyways whats funny is that when I just tried to google this problem, google.com momentarily didn't work, so I thought lets try Microsoft's live.com. The results for "emake || die "make of VLC failed" were as silly as "e-makeup" and "makeups and relationships". A minute later, google spewed out 4 pages vlc and gentoo
